Online or Face-to-Face Socializing

The Internet refers to a computer based global information system, allowing people to share information and communicate. Since the creation of the World Wide Web in 1989 and its commercialization, the Internet has become the most influential invention in the recent history. Today there are a considerable number of people communicating through the Internet. The way I see it, the Internet is a better way to socialize than face-to-face manner.

First of all, online communication means a much more extensive social group. For instance, three months ago, when I was studying TOEFL in Beijing New Oriental School, our class made a large chatting group on QQ, the most popular IM tool in China, containing about 300 students from everywhere in China. Now I’m able to chat with them to ask questions, to ask for advice for my essays, and even to ask them to help me register for my test. While in a face-to-face way, I might go around half of China to talk to them, if I knew where they were.

Moreover, so-called virtual socializing is convenient and effective. Here I will tell you another personal experience to prove point. During the past days, I’d been suffering from a serious diarrhea, and I knew those so-called doctors in the school clinic could do nothing. I have to attend class everyday that I couldn’t get enough time to go to hospital. What did I do? I messaged my mother who studied medicine to get a brief prescription. Then I just went to the clinic to get the pills I need. In this case the virtual way saved me time, money and even my life.

Of course, every coin has two sides. The Internet is full of schemes to defraud the users. You can never be too careful when socializing online. Someone may pretend to be your friend to ask you for personal information. If you don’t realize, it can bring you danger. However, compared with its advantages, this can be easily negligible.

For all the reasons mentioned above, I prefer online or virtual socializing. And as far as I see, maybe virtual socializing will completely replace the face-to-face manner in some areas.
