Do you agree with following statement, "It is better to learn board knowledge of many academic subjects than to specialize in one specific subject?"
Various opinions have been expressed regarding learning widely or specially. Although some people agree that learning board knowledge is better than specific subject, other people disagree. While both views are valid, I have developed my own opinion. I prefer to learn one special subject.
The key reason underlying my choice is that specializing one subject is more difficult than leaning widely. People can get a various rage of knowledge from magazines, books, or internet. There are a lot of metod people could use to get broad knowledge. However, if people want to learn a specific subject, they have go to school to learn the details of the subject. They may have to do a lot of experiments, or have a project discussion with a professor. Take two of my friends, Jeff and Leo, for an example. Jeff chose some classes related to his specific subject, medicine chemistry. In addition, he had a project discussion with a professor who directed him to do a lot of experiments to polish his thinking and skill. After Jeff graduated, a big company hire him to be the leader leading a studying group to developing a new medicine. Leo, he interested in a wide range of subjects. As a result, he chose various classes which are a basic foundation for every subject . After he graduating, he knew a lot, but he didn’t have special knowledge. All he knew is everyone know through reading books or magazines. He had no advantage to compete with other graduated student who also wanted to find a job. Now, Leo doesn’t still have a job.
Of course, some people may be moved to disagree with my position on this issue. They may think people have had board knowledge because the world has variety. Nevertheless, for the reason that I have presented above, I fell that my opinion is most valid.
