Books can be divided into two main types: fiction (novels and stories) and non-fiction (histories, biographies, and self-help books, for example). Which of these two types of books do you generally prefer to read? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
********************************************************************* Max Weber once said (and I paraphrase) that books were the greatest friends for human beings, leading us to many fantastic worlds that we can never have the chance to step in. His words perfectly display my feeling and affection towards books. A world with books is invariably enlightened with the light of knowledge; the one without books will always be creepy and horribly dark. Through browsing anxiously various sorts of books, fiction and non-fiction, my heart can always be filled with precious shinning knowledge. Although fiction differs from non-fiction considerably, with the former featured as imagination and creativity and the latter seriousness and practicality, I do attach equal significance to both of them because by addressing to different angles of my life, they are helping me in different ways.
Fiction has been existed since literature was born ages ago. The ample imagination and grand creativity displayed in them provide me with a more colorful life. After a whole day's work and study, I cannot help myself picking up a Mark Twain or Charles Dickens, all of which can help me relax and relieve all the pressures and anxieties from work and study. Take Mark Twain, my favorite writer, as an example. No one will deny the sarcastic humor demonstrated in his writing. When reading the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, my mind wanders freely with him in the spectacular view along the Mississippi River; the Adventures of Tom Sawyer then brings me to the exciting and adventurous journey Tom and his friends experienced on the little island. Fictions like these never fail to satisfy my appetite and curiosity. They broaden my imagination, leading me to think about what the fictional world on the other side of globe would be like. Each word and sentence in the book can purify and refresh my mind, in turn, I could have a more exultant mind back to work again.
On the contrary, non-fiction books are equally important to me in that they are displaying a completely different world to me. Through reading non-fiction books, my mind can be enriched, and horizon broadened. What I can learn from these books are something more substantial, more real, and more everlasting. Take the biography of Carniege. Spending two days in the library, I walk through the whole life of Carniege from his childhood to his final years. I learn how he overcomes difficulties, how he fights for his dreams and many other inspiring things. Through biography, I can always learn many precious qualities from heroes and celebrities. Among all non-fiction books, what I find the most intriguing is history book. As it is always said, history is a mirror which reflects the merits and demerits of the past. Reading the history about past wars, we can avoid from making similar mistakes now; reading the history about past kingdoms, we can know how to build a stronger one. Serious books like these can always be the fountain of our thoughts and guidance of our action.
On the whole, both fiction and non-fiction book are my oasis. They refresh me from the noisy world and provide me with much power. Sometimes, I feel sad to witness that with the increasing pace of the modern society, people even cannot squeeze time to read a few pages a day. Maybe it is the high time for modern people to reflect on this problem, and turn their attention from the magic box to the books. |
