Nowadays, it seems that television has become an indispensable part of our daily life. We can watch televisions almost everywhere, even in public areas such as airports, pubs, or on the train. We can see almost all kinds of programs from television too, which includes matches, concerts, soap operas, movies or educational programs, and so on. There exists a debate on what kind of function television should play in our society these days. It should emphasize the education or focus on the entertainment? In my opinion, although television can do both well, it should emphasize the entertainment function mostly. The reasons are as follows.
First, television has become one of the most successful profit tools of our society gradually. Its operation mechanism determines its main function is entertainment. And it seems that it plays this role more well than any other function. Just see where the top hundred companies put their advertisements to, which is the main income of television operation, we will find which kind of program is most popular. Sure it is the entertainment programs, such as "dancing show" or "super singer" or "the winner". Such kind of programs are easy to see without complex thinking or calculating, what we need to do is just making fun and relaxation. So the entertainment programs always create new records of audience rating. Now we know which function television is most good at.
Secondly, television its self has become the substitute word of relaxation to most people. When they are asked about what you would like to do in your rest time, almost all will talk about television as one of the answers. On the contrary, it's difficult for us to think of television when we talk about learning or education. It's mainly because of television is mainly used as an entertainment tool and it provides entertainment programs far more that education program. Even there are some educational programs, when we learning by television, we will change to entertainment channels in most situation.
However, we should admit advantages in education aspect. It has almost the largest quantities of audience and it covers almost every area of the nation, even of the world. When some necessary knowledge, such as any knowledge about epidemic diseases, should be educated to most people, television is the proper choice.
From what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that television has its merits in education, but it should focus on entertainment most.
