Well... if you are good at math, you can still give it a try. I do know some PhD students who have only engineering background, so don't give up.

well, it depends on who you have met. In top accounting programs, most of phd students don't have accounting background. For example, U of Chicago admitted a couple of Chinese students in recent years. Both only hold a master degree in econ, one from suny albany and another from ohio state. I can enumerate similar cases from other top schools.

Ph.D. program in accounting doesn't require any accounting background because it focuses on research rather than application.
