68. “Since the physical work environment affects employee productivity and morale, the employees themselves should have the right to decide how their workplace is designed.” Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
Nowadays, with the rapid economy development, the office buildings spring up like mushrooms in the major commercial cities all over the world. White collars spend most of the day, at least eight hours, within the office and most of them seldom have time to walk out for the fresh air because of heavy work load. Simultaneously, some illness associated with the physical work environment appears and thus the issue that the physical work environment affects employee productivity and morale has been brought up. Some people suggest that the employees themselves should have the right to decide how their workplace is designed. I agree with this opinion.
First, the physical environment in the work place has a direct relationship on the health and safety of employees. The hazards such as air-pollution, noise, radiation, and extremes in temperature and pressure will cause disease and thus decrease employee’s productivity. Many firms, such as Allied Signal, now identify workplace safety as one of their main goals. Some studies show that the symptoms of unexplained ill effects such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, coughing, shortness of breath, or fainting spells are issues with air quality and/or exposure to harmful chemicals. These chemicals are always pollutant released from printers or copy machines. Because of bad ventilation in the office building, these chemicals are not easily eliminated from indoor. Therefore, I think the better solution to solve the problem is to keep those machines away from employees. If the employees have right to design the office, they will choose the right places for these machines and make themselves a healthy work place and thus make their work performance more efficiently.
Furthermore, some workplace design may inconvenience for employees. Through my observation, when people work, they don’t want to be disturbed by nearby colleagues. If the work stations are too close, they will be annoyed by each other, sometime even other’s personal calls, and this will probably harm the harmony between individuals. If the employees are allowed to make some design, such as make some distance with other’s work station and put some cabinets between them, it will not only keep a quiet and comfortable work environment for them own but also will make convenience use of the cabinet for files.
In addition, by giving employees authority to design the company, it will make them feel even closer to the company. It’s not only a place where they work but also a place where they design, like home. These will strength their feelings of membership and builds up a tight relationship between the company and themselves. Consequently, I advocate that employees should have right to decide how their work places to be designed. Due to the above-mentioned reasons, which sometimes intervene to form an organic whole and thus become more persuasive, we may safely arrive at the conclusion I support. |
