Agree or disagree? Technology has made the world a better place to live.
Has technology made the world a better place to live? Yes. Although modern technology may create some problems people today have to cope with, in general, technology makes people’s lives more comfortable and convenient, strengthens people’s capability of controlling diseases, and most important, helps people increase food supply.
First, technology helps people today make their lives far more comfortable and convenient than ever before. Technology improves people’s living conditions, making homes, offices and other public buildings more comfortable. For example, in developed countries, such as the United States and Canada, controlled central heating and cooling become almost essentials for most homes. What residential comfort people have today may go far beyond the imagination of people a century ago. Furthermore, technology today enables people to travel farther and faster than in the past. Today, by a jet, An English person can cross Atlantic Ocean in a day while in the past the same travel by ship required months. Finally, technology shortens the emotional and psychological distance between people in the world. With the help of communication technology, people now can talk to any friends throughout the earth. Technology turns the earth into a Global Village, in which people are closely connected by instantaneous communication.
Secondly, technology boosts people’s ability to control or prevent many previously fatal diseases. Some diseases, such as TB, pneumonia and typhoid, which were long regarded as incurable in the past, now are no longer lethal threats to human beings. Furthermore, technology makes people more powerful in preventing and controlling contagious diseases. Through vaccination, people today can prevent previously horrible illness such as yellow fever, meningitis and hepatitis A, B and C. Modern sanitary also greatly contributes to avoid pandemics, such as bird flu, which took away millions of live early in last century. All the technology advancement makes people healthier, enabling people today to live longer than before.
Finally, technology helps people today greatly in their fighting against starvation caused by the shortage of food supply. Survival is the most essential thing for anyone in the world; a quality world necessitates the sufficient supply of food. In the past century, the population of the world increases sixfold while the area of total arable land decreases sharply. Without the help of agricultural technology advancing, the world would hardly feed the people today. As a matter of fact, modern technology not only helps people to solve the problem of food shortage, but also betters people’s daily diet. Another fact is, the frequency of famine in the world is much less than most time in history. All these achievements largely come from the advancement of technology.
Therefore, technology has made the world a better place to live for people today. Although contemporary people must face more complex difficulties such as environmental at present or potential nuclear war in the future, which are often connected with the advancement of technology, technology at best is a piece of mortar in human hands, supporting people to realize their aims, good or not. In any means, technology itself should not to blame as the primary culprit of these deteriorations. Agree or disagree? Technology has made the world a better place to live.
Has technology made the world a better place to live? Nowadays, we live in a society which is founded on the developments of technology; we enjoy the benefits from technological progress, such as the invention of the computer. However, it is not always true that technology has made the world a better place for people to live in.
With the invention of automobiles, it is very convenient and fast for people to go anywhere in a city. Nonetheless, automobiles have brought many negative consequences. They release such much exhaustive fume that the air in cities is severely polluted; they produce carbon dioxide which is deteriorating the global warming. It is an obvious fact that people have paid the cost for the convenience which is brought by technology and have to face intractable environmental crises.
Another typical example is the use of nuclear technology. Nuclear technology can be used to produce electricity to meet industrial and residential needs and to play a great role in solving energy shortages, whereas it can also be utilize to strengthen atomic weapons by some countries, which are apparently a threat to peace of the world and endangers all places in which people live.
It is promising for genetic engineering to help scientists find methods to cure some fatal illnesses and to relieve patients of suffering. However, the same technology may be utterly dire for everyone in the world, if such technologies are misused. Imagine what nightmares would be for us if dozens of our cloned replicas stood in front of us one day!
In sum, technology is only a kind of tool and the progress of technology itself is nothing wrong. Its role depends on how people use it. If it is used properly, it will make the world better, or it will, otherwise, endanger the places where people live.
