When interview decision could be made and available, only on or several days upon interview decision notification deadline, or during the whole period before interview decision notification deadline?

Personal Experience in INSEAD Singapore Campus

As mentioned on floor 422, I took the my vacation in Singapore and
Hongkong. And I also used the chance to visit INSEAD Singapore Campus
two weeks ago.

I contacted with a marketing coordinator in
INSEAD in advance so that I could join a lecture at 12:00. The professor talked
about macroeconomics, fascinating. Suprisingly, the lecture ended with
a stage show performed by the Latino for the opening of Latin American
Week in INSEAD SIngapore. Very nice tango and salsa, I have to say.

Well,
the other side it is really a shame that I couldn't get the chance to
really talk to the students. Since the information session started soon,
I had to leave and get to the hall. And then another marketing
coordinator came and showed the campus to a Japanese, a Taiwanese
American and me.

It is very clear that its quality,
reputation, Asian location and focus are enticing us most. Its
international atmosphere really reminds me my college time back in
Germany. I am pretty sure that from those sides INSEAD is exactly the
one I am looking for and I will surely enjoy my time there though the
schedule is very tough.

However, the thing keeps bugging
me is its one year length. I am from engineering background and looking
forward to a career switch. I am afraid that my lack of finance
knowledge can give me a real bad time in a one year program, even a
defeat. I am ready to a tough MBA time but I am also very sure that I
would like to avoid the failure. So is there any alumni who has experience on this situation and can share it with me? For me, someone who is from solely engineering background and would like to swtich to consultant or finance after MBA, is one year INSEAD too hard on finance topics for me to catch up? Or maybe you know someone I can turn to? I really appreciate the help.

My short term goal is to switch the career. I would like to get out of
the pure production engineering world and get into the consulting
industry in Asia. To find a job in a good consulting company does not
only mean a decent salary but also mean that I will be exposed to
varied industries. I would like to learn how to look at the business
not just from manufacturing side but with a "helicopter view".

So
INSEAD is one of the best possibilities I can have. A top MBA porgram
can offer me a platform to get into the consulting world if I work hard. Firstly, I
can learn about different aspects of business from the excellent
academic and get myself ready for my next move on aspects other than
just academic. Secondly there are lots of INSEAD students coming from
consulting background and I can surely learn from them as well. And
then, it is one of the favourite MBA programs for the big consulting
companies. With its reputation and alumni network in the industry, I
may get a better chance. Furthermore, the Asian location is also
attractive. INSEAD has the reputation in my favourite locations such as
Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore. I believe that my future career
shall be in east Asia. Well, the true mutliculture and international
experience is also what I am looking forward to. From my personal
experience, this kind of envornment is better for the Chinese to
interact with the class and professor compared to a less diversified
class. Not mention internation outlook is always a plus in business
world.

Long term goal? I don't want to lie and I don't have
a very clear view of that. I may want to have my own consulting
business later or I may get back to industry to do more practical things.
But I hope that I can figure that out clearly in the coming years.
Well, no matter what, MBA is a bridge. If I work hard eough, I may corss the river, which seperate me from a wider world. It is more than just eductaion. INSEAD is one of
the best. Its large, tight and international alumni network will help
me continuously after graduation no matter what business I am going to
do and this network will always be helpful in the future.

Bonjour to all the INSEADers here!  It's extremely nice of you to answer all our questions.  Before I start bombarding you with my questions, I hafta appologize for not being able to read through all the previous postings, in case I bring up questions which have been brought up before.

So here we go:
1) I understand INSEAD has a requirement for its students to learn a new language throughout the school year.  What I DON'T understand is how do they measure it upon graduation?  Have you, to the best of your knowledge, heard of any past incidents which a student was denied of graduation just because he/she failed to have learned a new language?

2) I'm a Chinese-Canadian.  Do you know for a fact that the school admin favour applicants who have multi-cultural background (purely from social and cultural perspective, not the global working experience)?  In some of your responses, you guys mentioned something like 40 Indians and 20 Chinese per intake.  Let's assume the admin does apply a 'quota' per country system.  Do you know how many Canadians they tend to accept every year?  Kellogg discloses these kinda figures officially, but I'm not sure whether INSEAD does it.  Btw, how do you guys come up with the number for Indians?  from some internal source or just a rough visual estimate?  If it's the latter, then the number could be for not only the Indians, but also Pakistanis, Sir Lankans and etc.  Right?

3) You guys have mentioned that it is very tough to get into the top consulting firms even for graduates from such top MC B-school as INSEAD.  I forgot whom, but someone even described it as based on 'luck'.  I'm sure candidates' working experience, skills and qualities can be very different from each other.  My question is, what do you think which 'in-school' qualities make the successful candidates stood out?  By 'in-school', I mean the things a student acquired during his/her MBA year.  Some examples can be: outstanding academic performance; involvement in student activities (such as the Consultancy Club and so on) and referral/recommendation from professors.  Basically, to get hired by a top consultancy firm is my short-term career goal and one of the reasons why I want to go to INSEAD, so I would like to know what I can do while studying at INSEAD that may increase my chance of getting hired by one of them.

Thanks in advance!

oh sorry, one more question.

Hypothetically speaking, say I apply for the Fall of '09 intake and get accepted, will I be able to apply for a deferred entry and go to school in Jan '10 instead?  I'd like to know if it's been done before, since I would love to have that option in case I have to fulfill certain commitment to my current employer by working for another 6 months or so.

The adcom will assign two interviewers for you and ask you to contact them directly. I don't think you can choose from a pool. Either business casual or business formal is fine.

I understand your reply. The 2 Alumni are appointed by INSEAD,so there is no room for me to choose.

A follow-up question.Could I communicate with Alumni regarding cities where I will be interviewed. Say, as I am in southern China, could I demand to be interviewed in a near city?

Many thanks for your kindly help.
