Some people think that children should begin their formal education at a very early age and should spend most of their time on school studies. Others believe that young children should spend most of their time playing. Compare these two views. Which view do you agree with? Why?
In response to the fierce competition and heavy pressure from the society, many parents hold the opinion that children should embark on their formal education as early as possible. Nevertheless, I still believe that children should spend most of their time playing with others. First of all, playing turns out to be a natural instinct that is inevitable for children. We all enjoyed playing basketball, having a picnic in the park, and going camping when we were very young. On the other hand, studying might not appeal to every child. The student union of my school once conducted a research, asking 200 students what his/her happiest memory was from kindergarten to primary school. Statistics led us to the conclusion that playing has exerted an indispensable influence on most of people since only 3 answers out of 200 were related to studying. And this suggested that playing plays an crucial role in everyone's life. Furthermore, playing helps children to cultivate their hobby and finally find something that they really enjoy. Since every child is attracted to playing and have fun during the process, they might realize the happiness of doing something they are very interested in and when they grow older as an adult, they may still benefit from it. However studying limits the children's preference and some of them might feel boring through the process of learning. That is not the appropriate way of education. My elder brother was once a crazy fan of computer games. He used to spend 5 to 6 hours on the computer everyday when he was a child. Therefore he was never considered promising student. Much to our surprise, he was so keen on the computer that he became a expert. Now he works as a computer engineer and earns 2000 dollars per month. His experience is a hard evidence of tapping one's interest through playing. Finally, playing is another form of studying. Through the process of playing, one can learn how to cooperate with others, how to beat the rival, how to insist and never give up. In my opinion, you can learn much more from playing than studying in the classroom. Take Rifer Alston, the famous NBA basketball player, as an example. He used to play basketball everyday on the street and earned the nickname "skip to my Lou" due to his wonderful skills. Later he went to NBA and received a salary about 5 million dollars every year. He fulfilled his dream and finally succeeded. But that was not because he studied hard in the classroom but because he played hard on the basketball court. In general, the advantage of playing outweighs that of studying. And I will always maintain the opinion that children should play instead of studying while they are young.
