LZ: please have a look at my writing below. I wonder whether if it could piture something into raters' mind, as you mentioned. Thanks, and any correction and comments are welcome. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Agree or disagree:
20 years from now, students are no longer using the printed books. ======================================================================================
This topic seems very controversial because we can find a list of different comments or discussions from different resources. Some people, especially those from the IT field, predict that it will take not that long before all the paper books vanish from this world. Others, however, maintain that paper books will still play an important role in average people’s lives no matter how advanced technology we would have achieved 20 years from now. Personally, I agree with the latter for the following reasons.
Life is short, not to mention just 20 years. That’s why I highly suspect that only after 20 years will we develop a kind of technology that is appealing to everyone, and is going to replace all the paper books. In addition, even if we have developed such technology then, it would still take some time for people to get used of using it. For instance, it took almost 100 years for the industrial revolution to be completed in the UK alone. Therefore, I think that 20 years are too short to market a technology that could substitute for paper books
Another point has something to do with ‘human touch’, which is one of our human nature. People just like touching real things. Take me for example, I feel uncomfortable when perusing reading assignments online. Besides, my eyes will become very sore after staring at the computer screen for a long time. In contrast, it has never become a problem when I read whatever assignments in books, and I just like the feeling of holding a paper book and reading through it.
Moreover, there is a practical issue. Any type of technology calls for electricity to power it up. It is true at the moment. So is in the future. Without power supply, technologies aren’t help to any individual. What if power just drains completely on a highly advanced technological device but you’re still in the middle of reading something contained in it? Probably, you would be surprised and very frustrated, and then you have to turn back to paper-based materials which weigh less than any highly developed technological gadgets and don’t require any power supply. The convenience of paper-based books cannot be denied, even in the future.
Based on what I mentioned above, I cannot agree with the point of view that claims paper books would disappear 20 years from now and students won’t use them any longer. The convenience nature of paper books will still play an important role in the printing industries as well as the consumer market. I can imagine that even after 30 years I would still take some time to lie on the grass in a sunny day, hold a paper book, and read my favorite stories in it. |
