之所以重新讨论这个题，我认为大家都忽略了一个问题，所以特意提出来，大家讨论讨论，看是否正确。

从原句来看，主句是Nuclear fusion is the force，而merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart是用来修饰that 从句的。

1。核子融合（S）可以说是一种力（O），但“核反应堆”绝对不是“力”，所以不能用like/unlike。故而可以排除B、E。而如果后面as要和主语比较，应该是as be。A、D中的in nuclear reactors与前面的句子结构中没有对应比较。所以as不是和主语对比。

2。那C中as引导的do到底是对应哪个动词？既不是merge也不是split。而是powers

以下是引用yhysss在2007-6-24 0:39:00的发言：
do 是跟前面的POWERS平行的，powers 可以做及物动词：给。。。能量

force powers the sun....，修饰语，as nuclear reactors power sth.

所以根本无所谓merge或split，但是核反应堆提供能量，那是肯定的。所以C是必选项。

不知是否正确。期待...

问个修饰的问题，把C代入答案，就没有修饰歧义吗？

merging 就近修饰bombs，也可以修饰Nuclear fusion，force？

这个答案也不是很正确？

时隔多日,回头再做这题,还是选了E.......呵呵,实在没有办法,只好向GMAC投降,说服自己选C.
个人看法,这题目还是有很多想不通的地方,当然E,也有不完美的地方:

先看OG11对D的解释:
"....punctuation makes clear that this separate action cannot be the case..."
我的理解是说,"and前面的逗号注定merges不能和powers并列",因为 AND是连接2个独立的句子的时候才要逗号,比如:

句子1,and句子2

如果是2个动词并列,那么and连接的不是独立的句子,加上逗号就run-on了.
即:

...动词1 and 动词2 (正确)

...动词1, and 动词2 (run-on)

所以这题目如果merges要和power平行,应该去掉逗号,或者and后面补上 that(that在这里充当第二句主语)

这个情况对E一样适用.

回到C,看来C的结构就是 2个分词短语mergering和splitting用rather than连起来,一起修饰主句.本来这个结构完全么有问题的,关键是后面又拖了一个 AS atomic reatcors do.
我的疑惑是:
1,这个as atomic reactors do到底跟谁平行??

2,如果as从句和主句平行:
  a.逗号隔开的分词短语会不会成为夹心结构?
  b.atomic reactors和谁对应?和force?和 fusion?无论和谁,逻辑上都不通啊.原子反应堆是分开原子的,不象聚变是合并原子的,如何 AS法?

3,如果和as和rather than后半截的 splitting them apart:
  a,分词短语 +as从句这种结构存在么?
 
第三条也是我久久不敢选C的顾虑.这种分词结构后面套从句的案例不知道存在与否??希望大家探讨.


或者是我totally想错了??

UP!把自己的问题思路理得非常的清楚，做一个题当做5个题，可惜我不能解答，希望有人能！！！

从实际意义上来看do应该是和split并列，nuclear reactors 就是分开原子才能提供能量。只是不知这是什么语法现象。还有你现在对C答案修饰谁没有问题了吗？我还是觉得它可以修饰主语也可修饰bombs.

这个as既不和主局平行,也不和splitting平行,和that powers平行.

确实是totally想错了!!
