thus = in this way, right? And thus is better since it is formal. But the key is D, why not E?

这里的thus 虽然有点咬文嚼字，但是语法上还真的没什么问题。要说有问题，when比较可疑。remain in this way when ...are removed. 那 after....are removed呢？
