楼主的翻译看上去是典型的中国式英语，如edify本身意思就是To instruct especially so as to encourage intellectual, moral, or spiritual improvement， 无需加上with mind。又如study后加上knowledge也是多余。

谋生的需要可能译为needs for living较好一些.

总的建议是不要拘泥于字面翻译，要用英语的习惯用法来表达意思。可多看英语原版词典里的例句。
