Mar. 15 14:05 Topic 1: Why do you think people attend college or university?
After taking the entrance examination, many lucky and aspiring middle school graduates are admitted to colleges or universities, beginning another 3 or 4 years’ campus life. When asked why they try to attend university, diverse answers may arise: getting a diploma for the future career, having fun in school, making friends with more talented people and etc. However, as far as I am concerned, college or university serves as a bridge between campus and society, that is, college life prepares students for the ultimate social life. First, as we all know, most colleges or universities are boarding school, and students must live in dorms. Away from the parents’ protective shelter, youngsters learn the necessary skills of independent life. They have to handle all sorts of things on their own, facing some trouble or challenges which they never encounter in their previous lives. At this point, those future social citizens learn to be an independent man. Besides, as students from different backgrounds pour into colleges or universities, colleges or universities are, to some point, turned into a global village, which characterizes open and diverse. People at colleges or universities can have a better understanding of interpersonal relationship. In my college time, my roommate often stayed up while I was used to going to sleep before 11 o’clock at night. When she was still making assignment vigorously at 12 o’clock, she could not help but make some noise. First I would bear it, but gradually, I found communicating frankly was a better way. Therefore, I chose a time and talked to her in an appropriate manner. It was a happy ending, and we still became good friends despite some differences in living habits. Finally, learning essential career skills is also an indispensable part of college life. In colleges or universities, people have to take the major courses and other courses which attract our interests. In this way, people can find where their talents lie, thus helping them setting career goals in future. Nowadays, it’s hard to imagine a teenager to enter society without college life This is not because he or she lacks the knowledge since attending colleges or universities are not only for knowledge but for a transitional period between campus and society. People are bound to return society no matter how many years they stay in campus. The 3-4 year college life functions as an ending of campus life and a beginning of social life.
