I am afraid that we have generation gaps. The story comes from an (very) old 语文 textbook, a chapter from <儒林外史>, "范进中举" ---- 老童生范进得知自己中举后立马疯掉. His father-in-law, a butcher, had to slap him heavily with his oily palm to help 范进 come to senses.

I don't think you can accept other admissions after you accepted the DUKE admission.

glad that you have read it.  Read it a second time after a few days, you will notice and savor more details in the descriptions. I have just read it again and found that I missed a lot of details when I read it yearS ago.
