你的理解相反了：）variation表示数量或者程度的变化时 它是不可数名词 没有复数形式 表示差异的时候 是可数名词 这个题目中variations表示岩石属性的差异 所以用复数

至于in和among 你又想多了 in表示这个差异体现在岩石自身（比如说：地震前1年和地震前1个月的属性差异） 而among表示差异存在于个体之间（比如说：花岗岩和玄武岩等等） 因此可以有variations in (among) 也可以有 variation in (among) 就看要表达的是个体自身比较还是个体之间比较

后面跟IN表示变化，
而后面跟AMONG表示差异。

但我查了好多例子还是拿不准何时用单数，何时用复数。

我是根据剑桥的解释
variation is change in amout or level : The medical tests showed some variation in the baby's heart rate.  

a variation is a difference[C]: The research team has a very good record of day-to-day variation in pollution in the atmosphere.

不过现在分析这里的variation和variations都可以解释成变化 也都可以理解为差异

这么说这里用variation 和variations都可以 只是因为要表达的是个体自身的差异 所以用in不用among？

我现在的看法是in和among的区别就是看是针对个体本身比较还是对个体之间比较 同样道理 这里也可以用between表示两者间的差异比较: No evidence for phenotypic variation between probands in case-control versus family-based association studies of schizophrenia.

对于单复数 前面我已经举过单复数都用in或者都用among的例子 我查了下资料 发现同样是between也有这样的现象：Variations between countries in invasive cardiac procedures and outcomes in patients with suspected unstable angina or myocardial infarction without initial ST elevation的表达方式一样可以。

而在句意理解上 我没有发现有什么不同 是不是如我所猜测的variations和variation都可以 请gemj兄用你那浩瀚的资料帮我确认一下吧
