2006.5.12 Teacher should teach student's self-confidence or specific knowledge
After several years' of school life, I found that teachers play an important role in our lives, and the role they play varies. There are times when teachers cheer on us and endeavor to make us self-confident. Nevertheless, they still teach us specific knowledge sometimes.
During the days of elementary schools, teachers, as a rule, act as an advisor. They teach us abundant things apart from knowledge, like how to communicate with others and how to play on the team. One of their main missions is to aid us to build self-confidence rather than impart specific knowledge. This is mainly because of the special stage we are at, the first step of our way to knowledge. If we can't gain confidence in the first few years of study, it is hardly possible to cultivate our interest in the field of study again. Though there are scientists who are not considered as intelligent and even somewhat foolish, like Einstein, the more common situation is that students can learn better if they are encouraged.
Later, we entered junior and senior high schools. These two periods can be considered as one stage, because the style of study is pretty much alike. Students, in junior school, work to their best (do their possible) get admission to senior school, and in senior school, to college. Therefore, students are more than likely enduring hard times full of stress from the teachers, parents and maybe themselves. In such a difficult period, teachers should once more help students to keep self-confident; while load on the shoulder sometimes overwhelm them and they can not concentrate on study any more. However, teachers at this stage, play another indispensable role as well, that is to teach students specific knowledge. After all, there is a final comprehensive exam at the end of both junior and senior high school, and the test results determine whether students can pursue their academic study in their dream school anymore.
When students have been admitted to university, the role of teachers alters to teaching specific knowledge. Before entering university, students seldom have the chance to specify in certain fields and there is continuously some anxiety haunting on their mind, this again keeps them away from the free absorption of knowledge. Nevertheless, the freedom to choose a major and pick any courses they like inspires them to learn more in university. Thus students are eager to absorb as much knowledge as possible. Teachers, of course, ought to help them fulfill their desires.
The conclusion that the roles of teachers alter as the change of study period we are in, can be drawn from the above discussion. Students adore and respect teachers with the ability to teach both self-confidence and specific knowledge mostly.
