学校在录取的时候会有一个portfolio的考虑，相似背景的人会控制在各自相应的比例。比如说top school的phd,他们确实牛，但一个program不可能全招phd,可能某一年有这类背景的牛人特别多，就会导致一个牛人落选。而有些人背景看上去不是那么的牛，但是committee需要招几个有这类背景的人，才能反映出他们的diversity。运气有时在申请中还是挺重要的

I think Stanford prefers younger candidates.

They also prefer females to claim no discrimination and care for minority.

Actually, i don't think Stanford like Ph.D applicants as their main target of the program is to train Ph.D candidates for Finance or related Field Ph.D.

Say, if a Ph.D applis for finmath in Stanford, the ad committee mgiht wonder

1.Is this guy too old for financial jobs?

2. If he doesn't like his original research field, how could we expect him to be one strong finance Ph.D candiate at the end of the program?

Anyway, remember Stanford's program is not built for job-hunting, but mainly for academic ...

Same comments apply to chicago's program. Both of them r not business-oriented and poor career center ..

Really?? I in my Statement of Purpose place particular emphasis on my job-oriented career goals rather than academic...  What about that of those who get admitted?

You got it. Another Phd made the same mistake as u and he was rejected too.

The ad committee in stanfrod r mainly from math, stat and only very small # r from GSB, how could they like ur business-oriented goal?

u should emphasize ur interest in math combined with modern finance theory and apply them to investigate current derivative marktets...
