You can do a long distance part-time.  I think Duke, UT and MIT all have something that allows you to spend the majority of your time away from the school.

Still, no people come to tell us more about after-MBA life and career, which is the most important thing why we go for an MBA.

looking forward to hearing more.........

I'll suggest two things that you can do.

First, you can look into your own company. Does your company hire fresh MBAs for VP track positions? What's background for current VPs? If possible, talk to those people two or three levels above you to see how you can get there? (My gut feeling is that an MBA, at least a full-time one, is not necessary in your case, but I could be wrong because it really depends on the industry, the company and how aggressive you are.)

Second, since you graudated from a b-school in the States, it shouldn't be hard to find some alumnni with MBA degree. Talk to those working in your industry and function to get their advice. Some random people on this forum talking about how they use MBA to switch to IB/MC and life afterwards is not gonna help you that much.

yeah, it seems not so many people will come back and talk about their life and career after MBA in this forum. Are they too busy, or they are not interested in this forum anymore? even in the "working abroad" section, MBA grads don't talk too much about their jobs. we are kinda of focusing on before not after MBA topics.

I am still not sure what you really want to achieve after MBA. But anyway, other than the technical knowledge, software skills and alumni network that you gain from school, you may also find you 'will' live in a different world - you will change the way you think and find opportunities that you never heard before.

I guess for your case, you should try good schools, at least top 30. Otherwise you may find that your MBA won't bring much value. In addition, I don't recommend you to talk with your boss since you may find that none of your future MBA classmates will join your industry or company if you join a top schools. e.g. I heard that in a top business school, there were only four students attending campus presentation by Honeywell, which showed that Honeywell is really not an attractive company in this school.

Thanks, Kevinao.I appreciate your consistent response to my questions.

Actually I'm not a technical person. I'm working in mkt dept. My company goes to top B-schools to recuit people every year. It's not Honeywell, but it's also a fortune 300 company. My boss is a director who graduated from Bloomington. And the other director in my dept. is a Wharton alumni. But that doesn't represent the education background for the majority of people in mkt department. Many directors in mkt dept. don't have an MBA. That's why my boss doesn't think I need one to reach my career goal. He thinks experience is more important.

My long-term goal is to be a VP in my company handling asia related market. I'm not interested in IB, which is a hot area for MBAs. I want to work in my current industry. So you may have more comments based on the info. I added on.

thanks.

'technical' means 'knowledge', e.g. accounting, marketing, finance, HR, operation, strategy etc.

I don't have too much further comment as I don't really know much about your industry, and marketing since I am surrounded with bankers, accountants and consultants in the past 10 years.

In accounting area, I still know top schools can help.  I have many friends with big 4 + ACCA/CPA + financial controllers experience in MNC. Their annual package is around CNY400-500K.  It's not easy for them to reach higher levels in terms of position and pay. With a top 10 school background, there will be some offers that request special skills  (e.g. overseas background, corporate finance knowledge) and have pay exceeding USD100K in China. and your mindset will be more global as you might consider opportunities globally.

Another insight is you might change your goal in school when you see a much wider world. I would be happy to go back to my previous company before I went to my school, but my ideas changed totally influenced by my classmates . If you have very strong background, then I will only recommend you to apply for top schools. You may not find much value in a school that ranks 50 in US or 10 in UK.

Hope the above can give you some insight.

以下是引用kevinao在2006-12-9 11:56:00的发言:

Our new director got his degree from a B-school ranked out of 150 in the US.
