我知道句子结构是这样的。我想问的是：定语从句是不是只能用一个that?第二个that是不是应该被去掉？

我觉得在这里不省去第二个that是有道理的，这使得and 前后的并列更清晰。三大准则中就有clear这一条。
因为这个句子里前面是that is the earlist example,后面是that thus represents an advance.
前面用的是be动词，后面是行为动词represents，如果不补出that的话，平行结构不够clear。

但如果前后两个都用的是be动词的话，例如 …… wooden hull that
is the earliest surviving example of a "built" boat and that is****的话，这里的 that 就可以省略了吧。

同意你的意见。但是，为了使and前后的结构清晰，可以不省去第二个that吗？请问定语从句中有这种使用多个that的语法原则吗？请指出。

我觉得that不能省略会不会是因为that后面的v并不是一样的，如果省略了，句子结构反而会有问题了。
