PREP 2.96 本句使用了冒号(的一个用法，它可以用来连接两个不同的句子，后面一个句子作为前一个句子的解释说明，不会构成run-on sentence的问题。
     
另外还有PREP 1.116  REP1.169 都是用来接句子作解释说明的。



所以，从GMAT的角度来看这一题选C，我觉得是最佳答案。而且these优先指代最近的名词types.表达非常清楚，并没有歧义。

2，在你举的例子里，hot sauces stimulate the release of endorphins in the brain, just as exercise does, and these have a pain-relieving effect like morphine's. 因为just as exercise does,是插入语，不看。而前面最近的名词是Brain。那么一个单数的名词怎么用THESE来指代呢？
两点没有明白关于两个核心问题，盼指教～
1，冒号的用法，是否可以等同于Include（后面接词组），也可以等同于分号（后面接完整的句子）
2，these的用法，能否单独使用做指代？如何判断指代的是前文的哪个名词？

参考了薄冰语法对于冒号的说明，冒号一般做以下几种用途：
1，列举事物：
(*) she came to hate the endless chores that swallowed her time: washing dishes, making beds, scrubbing floors.
2，解释前文：
(*) that man is dishonest: he lies and cheats.
3，正式文体中用在引述动词之后：
(*) he said in english: "i'm cool"
4，表示各种逻辑上的关系：
(*) I went to bed early: the long journey had tired me. （因果关系）
(*) Columbus discovered a string of islands: he did not discover the American Continent. （反义关系）
(*) Those who lead must be considerate: those who follow must be responsive. （对照关系）
解答关于分号的用法问题。关于Those，仍然期待得到答复。

我的意见是C，既然These可以用来单独指代，就避免了指代成writing的情况，而B是有这种指代混淆嫌疑的。

1，冒号的用法：冒号后面可以连接——一个句子、句子并列、词／短语直接并列 （而分号则不同，分号后边必须连接完整的句子）
2、根据白用语法，These／that／this等都不能单独充当一个句子的主语。（所以C不对，况且B与C相比更简洁）
