no, I am applying for 2007 Fall Finance Phd programs. One of the alumni from my current program got into CMU's math finance program, but he ended up going to Stanford. I don't know much about NYC quant market, i am located in Waterloo. btw, i am also preparing for Nov gmat, really a pain.....
CMU's program looks awesome - one of the few by math department, whereas most others by b-schools. Tks again kobehenry! But why did your fella leave it? Stanford doesn't seem to have a PhD math fin by math department. Guess he went for a different kind of program. Do you by any chance know of any other math fin programs by math depart? CMU's good coz people get straight into the hardcore sexy part of the beauty, but with others by b-school I'll have to do something I don't like.
indeedyou1981, to answer your question, PhD is a must for a hardcore quant but I'm still not there yet;-( I enjoy doing a PhD like CMU's math fin. Since London has more quant jobs than New York (which I guess is due to the fact that derivatives markets are bigger in London and some other obvious reasons), you can expect to get a title of quant in London with only a masters, but I don't believe you'd be lucky enough in New York. Actually most good schools are in the states but many famous practitioners (all PhD) are in London. Comparing London and NY is quite interesting - agree with you on the damn expensive living costs in London but people have more holidays and work less per day in London. Anyway, much else.
