A.it assignedto do（it assigned to do其实是定语从句的一部分修饰experts，只是省略了作宾语的关系代词whom，it指代主语White house）

省略的不是whom.

In 1994 the white house named Dr Ruth R. Faden chairperson of the federal advisory committee of experts [it assigned to doa report on the history and ethics of the government’s radiation experiments on humans in the 1950’s and 1960’s].

(In 1994) the white house named RRF chairperson of the XXX committee (that/which) it assigned to doa XXX report.

that/which指代committee, it指代white house. that/which省略了.

想问一下定语从句中that，which什么时候可以省，什么时候不能省呀？？

这题实在不好选，但偶选D，大家再帮忙看看。。。

1) they assigned to do(they不知指谁，而且这里作定语从句根本不需要初补出主语，排除)

2) to be assigned doing (to be有将来的意思，这里应该是修饰committee,要不直接用分词，要不用定从。排除)

3) that was being assigned doing (was being一看就很不顺眼，GMAT考试应该不怎么prefer这种用法，而且觉得assign doing不对，排除)

4) assigned for doing (虽然感觉assign to do比较对，但for同样可以表目的，算是better的选项吧)

5) it assigned to do (错误同1)

虽然版主有很好的看法，但是国外考800的传奇人物，都选E!

我觉得也是选E，因为：

A they没有指代

B 没有查到有assign doing的用法

C 没有查到有assign doing的用法；而且was being过去进行时，但原句中没有证据表明要用过去进行时；

D use for doing用得不对啊，By the standards of North American idioms, "for doing" will pretty much never be correct；

E it只能指代the White House，这个没有问题！

外国两个大牛，考GMAT800的，都支持E!

请指教！

支持D的，说E中的it多余；

支持E的，说for不能表目的，要用to；

我赞成E。
首先assigned for doing的用法极为不authentic。然后大家再多读几遍E会发现it的指代是蛮清晰的。句子里面虽然充斥着各种名词但是能用it代替的只有white house。

我赞成没有答案。。知道错在哪就好了。但是IT后面那串定语从句到底修饰啥？补出来whom感觉离的好远，补出来that又感觉在OF里面，有点awkward

白宫任命F博士作为其（it，指白宫）指派的专家委员会的主席来做一个报告。。。

同意zenereo,省略的是that/which，而不是whom。it assigned修饰的是committee, 不是experts
