1.If you are senior engineer in singapore, annual pay around S$60k-80k.

2.Both cambridge and oxford are second tier Bschool, a MBA degree from there may not help you get what you want ( if you are looking for decent jobs in finance and VC markets), plus you are a career switcher.

3.Aim for MIT, target at 720+ GMAT.Or other top Euro BSchool.

Just my 2cents worth.

Thanks Shaoji ! For family reason, I have to find a school in UK, nearby London.

If Holding a Cambridge or IC MBA could help me to reserve a middle-level managment position in Hi-tech Company as Intel, Microsoft, I will be also very satisfied.

For USA school, it will take me two years and more money. I only feel that MIT or Standford is worthy for my case, while those two schools have very strong engineering backgroud. But my resume is not so outstanding, GPA is too low.

I also have a patent in Europe/USA, and hold PMP (Project Management Professional) certificate, are those helpful?

BTW, if everything is ok, I will gradute from school around 32 age. Does the VC market care about the age? What kind

of position is for the newer without finance experience? Does my engineer experience help a little for VC position?

I know that a lot of high-tech startup companys are located in Cambridge, that also one cent

1. Your background is very solid, i think both patent and PMP help in your application.

2. Nowadays every Bschool asks for diversity, preference sometimes does not work well for non traditional MBA applicants who are not from consultant site or with finacial backgrouds. Think about it,if you go to MIT, Purdue or other so called high-tech Bschools, you will compete with best engineers from best companies who also have patents or other decent experience. But that will be a different story if you try other bschools.

3.In my case, i'm also from Singapore, only 2 year WE as an sales engineer, now i got in INSEAD with some scholarships. So maybe you can change your mindset and take a consider of other schools like LBS, INSEAD which can help you more on your future plan.

Thanks Esraph, I know this program, it's something like MOT (Management of Technology), not very popular. In Singapore, NTU and NUS has a alliance with MIT, the couse is advanced and interesting. But that's all, not popular in Job market.

I donot want to stay a company full of MBA (Then how to figure out? ).  I want to work without MBAer, then big name is the best choice. In my idea, only Magic 7 + Yale + Oxford + Cambridge are worthy. Even Insead or LBS donot fit me well.  And IC is a backup (I hope so)

If could not be in Oxbridge or IC, I will try to still work as engineer and take part-time mba, just for the degree.

Thanks Shaoji, you also give me a diversity idea ;-)

I also think about totally change my career path to management consultant or finance. I am worried that I could not find consultant or finance job after graduate. If company could find a young man around 26-28 withseveral years related exp before MBA, who will consider a 32 years guy with useless engineer exp? And if I am in LBS or Insead, I think 70% of my classmates with those profile. I would get a excellent MBA degree, but may not find a good job.

So I hope the school could help me change the career path to management consultant or vc. If not, at least could let me find a middle-level position in my current industry.

Hi SeanBB,

To be honest, the more I have read your posts, the more they confuse me.

Given your career goal, consulting firms or VC, surely your best bets are with either LBS or INSEAD if you come to do your MBA in Europe. Both of them are the feeder to the most reputable consulting firms and between these two, LBS’ alumni network in VC is second to none in Europe. If you only want to get a mid-level management position in a technology firm, any MBA degrees can help you achieve this. You might as well stop worrying about which school you want to choose.

A one-year programme or a two-year one? It has always been a big debate. A two year programme can definitely prepare you better especially when you want to change your career and the exchange scheme in the second year is another big selling point to many applicants. How much difference would one-year difference in age make when it comes to hiring? Put yourself in an employer’s position, whom would you hire: a 32-year old from Cambridge or a 33-year old from LBS? In this case, the age factor is almost neglectable.

I guess you are still having an engineer’s mindset which is fair enough. But you may want to start changing it now if you want to do an MBA and aim to switch your career to a completely different one. Keep your mind open and you can see endless possibilities out there.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars.

Regards,

Andrew
