19 Exclusive GREadvantage.net Tips for
Writing an Effective Issue Essay

1.
If you are not confident in your
English typing skills, take the handwritten GRE® exam.

2.
Start your essay with a question that
you will answer. This will put you in an analytical frame of mind.

3.
State your view on the topic firmly and
clearly in the first paragraph.

4.
While you are allowed to focus on only
part of the topic, it is far better to consider the entire topic. This will
lead to a more comprehensive, in-depth essay.

5.
Do not declare what the essay WILL
cover (e.g. “In this essay, I will show...” or, “This essay covers...”), just
get right to the heart of the matter. The reader will understand what the essay
is about as they read it.

6.
Support your positions with relevant,
detailed examples. Unsupported opinions and statements will not help your
score.

7.
Where possible, use personal life
experiences to help bolster your presentation, and validate your position.

8.
Use relevant historical, artistic,
and/or literary references in your examples.

9.
Investigate the “real” meaning of the
words in the topic (e.g. ask the reader what the word really means, then
present your own definition). Offer your own definitions of words and phrases
used.

10.
Do not contradict yourself at any point
in the essay. Every statement you make should support your position, not argue
against it.

11.
Write conversationally. This will make
your essay easier to read. Fleshing out the essay with “big” words will not
help boost your score if the flow of the essay is disrupted.

12.
Use of the third-person voice is not
necessary. It is more important to concentrate on presenting a cogent viewpoint
than on using proper voice.

13.
Use complete sentences. Do not simply
make a list of points and questions.

14.
Vary the length and format of your
sentences. It will make your essay sound more sophisticated to the reader.

15.
Apply the “5
in

            5” rule: each
paragraph should contain at least five sentences, and your essay should contain
at least five paragraphs. In general, the longer the essay the higher the score
(but be sure not to add “fluff”, just to make the essay longer).

16.
Make the essay easy to read, and pleasing
to the eye. Indent five spaces at the beginning of every paragraph and double
space between paragraphs. Do not type in all capital letters.

17.
Use proper punctuation. If you are not
confident in your punctuation skills, at least place periods at the end of each
sentence and capitalize the first letter of the following sentence.

18.
If time allows, review the essay for
errors, focusing on word usage, and replace any awkward sounding words with
better synonyms.

19.
If you are running out of time, start
writing a new sentence, even if you do not have time to finish it. The reader
will think that you had more to say and will view your essay more favorably.

21 Exclusive GREadvantage.net Tips to
Writing an Effective Argument Essay

1.
If you are not confident in your
English typing skills, take the handwritten GRE® exam.

2.
Start your essay with a question that
you will answer; this will put you in an analytical frame of mind.

3.
State your position firmly and clearly
in the first paragraph.

4.
Do not declare what the essay WILL
cover (e.g. “In this essay, I will...” or, “This essay will explain...”), just
get right to the heart of the matter. The reader will understand what the essay
is about as they read it.

5.
State
“Correlation does not equal causality.” The fact that two variables seem
similar does not mean that identical changes to these variables will generate
the identical results.

6.
Do
not simply state that more information is needed to analyze the topic. Analyze
the information that is there.

7.
Demonstrate
how the given statistics are weak and/or irrelevant.

8.
Address
every statistic that is given in the topic and discuss how these statistics do
not prove the argument.

9.
Offer
your own definitions of word and phrases used in the prompt.

10.
Do
not start your essay with ideas on how to improve the argument. Rather, first
demonstrate how the argument is weak, and then suggest ways to improve the
argument.

11.
Support
all of your positions with clear, relevant examples.

12.
Avoid
stating opinions, and concentrate on presenting facts. High-scoring essays do
not contain unsubstantiated opinions.

13.
Do not, at any time, contradict
yourself in the essay. Every statement you make should support your position.

14.
Write conversationally. Filling the
essay with “big” words will not help your score if the flow of the essay is
disrupted.

15.
It is not necessary to use a
third-person voice. Concentrate on presenting a valid argument, rather than
focusing on proper voice.

16.
Apply the “5
in

            5” rule: each
paragraph should contain at least five sentences, and your essay should contain
at least five paragraphs. In general, the longer the essay the higher the score
