其实今天碰巧有个猎头refer了一个投行在香港的job opportunity, 又产生了新的犹豫和挣扎,如果能直接进投行,是否千辛万苦的读mba就更枉费了呢?(从感性上讲,读top mba的光环和great exposure 始终保持着其巨大的吸引力,但从理性角度分析,读mba究竟为了什么呢?"why mba" in practical way is more difficult to answer than in essay.)
This is really a hard decision, maybe the most difficult one I've ever made.
1. go to top business school when you are young. Many students (if not most) in top business schools have better background than you. For example, it's quite easy to find students from Goldman, Morganstanley, Mckinsey in top schools, while managers in HSBC/Citigroup are just average pre-MBA jobs. Therefore I don't think opportunity cost is an issue. I even heard a VP in CICC with annual pay USD200K went to MIT MBA last year.
2. Take the IB offer before go to business school. I don't think you will join commercial banking again after graduation (if it's a top business school) and it can be difficult for a relationship manager to transfer to IB, private equity or hedge funds since commercial banking is not 'finance'. HK IB experience plus top business school will almost guarantee you a much brigher future (starting pay above USD110K) if you are good at communications skills, which I do have trust judging from your job nature at the moment.
