 there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were 因为were后的省略了，说明were后应该是个复数名词，并非一定是one microcomputer，可以是two microcomputers

谢谢版主的帮助啊！

前面表示的倍数是“每32个学生拥有1台电脑”，和4年前比，比较的形式是否也应该是每x个学生拥有1台电脑呢？（也许我钻牛角尖了？）

另外，“是4年前的4倍”，想问一下，我们能从句意上知道4年前学生和电脑的比例是多少？是1：128吗？

I am sorry but I personally disagree with the banzhu's opinion.  I don't think it has anything to do with one microcomputer or two microcomputer. "Four times as many as there were" means there are 4 times as many pupils as there were.  That's why it's there were instead of there was.

好像楼上讲得有些道理哦，不好意思再问一下，如果4年前是1：8，那么原句想表达的意思是：现在的人均占有电脑比例比以前低？以前可以8个人用1台电脑，现在却是32人用1台电脑？

Ahhh, sorry sorry.  Now it's 32 students/computer, before it was 128 students/computer.

According to the paragraph, yes it is true. Wow the ratio is worse than that in the old days, which does not make "common" sense to us because we always assume that things are always getting better and this is where GMAT twists our brains.
