I don't think that than those can be detected is correct, because what is detected is the light instead of the sources. Please do correct me if I am wrong.

Those不可以用来指代不可数名词.

The first that refers to light. those 指代 sources.

同意。我觉得这里LIGHT指光线所以可数，LIGHT做光讲的话就不可数。

我又仔细想了想觉得被比较的对象应该还是sources, 而不是light，因为
light --> capture
sources --> detect

Moreover, if light is the compared object, I don't see any reason to put sources there.

所以完整的句子应该就是:

the Hubble Space Telescope will capture light from sources
        (that are) twenty times fainter than those (are) that can be detected by ground-based instruments.

(the Hubble Space Telescope will capture light from)与后面没什么关系.

如果是这样的话，为什么说sources fainter 呢？来源怎么能微弱呢，应该是光线才对啊。

请指教
