The issue of whether television or radio programs should be censored for offensive language and behavior carefully is complicated since this problem involves a conflict between people’s right of free speech and government’s obligations to screen out harmful information. In my view, avoiding the potential harm caused by offensive information takes precedence over the freedom to broadcast any information.

First of all, broadcasting offensive content will do damage to the society. The media has great influence on people’s thinking and behavior, sometimes even greater than people have realized. Many people will gradually accept the ideas reflected in the television or radio programs, and take it for granted that the behavior and language broadcasted in these medias are appropriate. Therefore, if people are surrounded by things full of violence,obscenity and so on, it is very likely that more immoral thinking and behavior will appear in our society.

Secondly, the potential harm of offensive information to the youth is especially serious. Since the youth are less mature than adults, they are also less immune to bad influence. Many news stories have reported the tragedies resulted from the bad influences of offensive information on the teenage. To avoid such tragedies, it is necessary to censor the programs that the young can access.

Some may still stress the importance of freedom of speech. I concede that censorship may get rid of some information, however, the benefit from censorship obviously far exceeds the drawback . Furthermore, it can be anticipated that people will enjoy the programs without offensive language or behavior more freely.

In conclusion, broadcasting offensive information has very bad effects on the society and people and should be dismissed from our media. To reach this goal, censorship is a necessary method. The government or other organization should try to avoid broadcasting offensive information and take every step to reduce this harm to the least.
