Rochester VS Maryland

working yrs: almost 3.

career goal :finance. if possible, would also like to try an IB job.

Rochester + 25% tuition waiver VS Maryland + full tuition waiver for the first year and more than half of the tuition for the second yr. As R has edge on Finance and may give me more related job opportunities while M's location is better, I can not make up my mind yet.

Don't want to wait another couple of years to try a top 10. Any buddy could kindly share your suggestion in choosing? highly appreciated!

Thx, PHXMU. R is indeed in top 30, and its ranking is close to M. While just considering finance ranking, R should be much higher than M. And it seems that more IB firms go to R for campus recruitment.

It is a tough decision. At Simon finance is probably the strongest area traditionally, I believe. But Rochester is a small city. I visited it once and after 9pm we could not find an opening restaurant. Nevertheless, it is close to the lake and is beautiful. Rochester is much colder and gets lots of snow in winter. I believe it is a good three or four hours of drive to New York.

Smith is close to DC, a major metropolitan area in US. Many things are going on here. Also Smith offered you a much better financial package, unless you really don't care about the money. I don't think finance is the strongest program here (Correct me if I am wrong), but it is strong and I did see students here trying to get into IB.

Good luck at making your decisions. Definitely try to talk to current students from both schools before making your decision.

As I mentioned before, the location of Simon is not as bad as most people thought. Simon is 10 minutes away from Rochester International Airport (ROC), which has shuttle airplanes fly to NYC and Washington DC every couple hours. Usually, the round trip costs $120. Let's say, you can leave your apartment around 5:30AM and show up at Wall St. around 8:30AM.

Simon just hired Patricia Phillips, who previously managed the Upstate New York region for DBM, as CMC director. Simon students already see the difference of the CMC. Each new Simon full time student has the personal career consultant start from the beginning to help them to prepare the resum, cover letter, networking, and interview.

Besides the obvious location and financial concerns, you can also compare the career serivce and placement stats of 2 schools. If there are any particular IBs you want to work for, make sure they do on-campus interview at your school. It is important to know which companies recruit on-campus at your school, because on-campus interview will be the best easiest way to land a job. If possbile, find out how many companies actually interview international students and how many companies interview for finance positions.

I do not know about Maryland, but at Rochester, 25% graduates go to IB, and 30% Finance and Accounting. For international students, the keys to land a job are communication skills and personality.

Between these two, it should be an easy pick towards umd.  First, never look too much into the speciality ranking.  Second, umd's location advantage is unbeatable, plus you have the incentive of financial aids there.

As per whether you should wait another couple years, it will be your own call.  But are you sure you can improve your chance a lot in next couple years?
