if you are really concerned with VISA, you can try this longer but safer way. Excuse me first for the terms used in the following, =). LG may go to stanford with enough fund (for VISA and living). LP go to Canada first with the scholarhsip (are you immigrant?). It will be much eaiser for you to visit each other in North America than across the pacific ocean. Maybe, UfT will land LP a very good job. Also this way, you two will pretty easily re-join later on once you settle down (with jobs and/or green cards) in either Canada or US. No doubt this will cause you to travel and call a lot in the following one/two years. But,if you prefer to be back to China, I don't see big difference for LP joining in Maryland or UfT, even though market is one big factor to consider as others said. Back to this idea, you have to be here first and then say jobs and anything else, right? Just for your reference and good luck.

I remember that you don't need to fill in whether your spouse is applying F-1 in the visa form.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

how about go to stanford with you first(f2), then apply stanford this fall, her stats: work/academic/gmat + current student husband + international female seem pretty competitive to me (defer maryland as backup maybe)

Have you tow ever thought about that one of you can defer the admission and come to the states as an F2? I am really not familiar with visa stuff, but just shouting out watever comes to my mind.... pardon me if that doesnt make any sense.
