1. I don't think Ph.D applicants admission is randomly selected. Only those qualified applicants have interest close to one of the faculty members' research focus will be recruited.

2. You application materials may be passed onto several faculty members. Sometimes they do disappear.

3. If you can apply for different levels B-schools, you chance of getting into a program will be better. The requirements for a Ph.D applicants is much more higher than a MBA applicants.

4. Only if your stated information in your application has a noticable change, you don't need to reapply for the same schools that you already sent applications.

1. Well, doctoral admission is a winner-takes-all market. So even slight differences can result in accept/reject. From that perspective, given 100 applicants who are roughly equal in key aspects, only 3 to 5 are accepted. Moreover, sometimes, the faculty change interests and etc. So from an applicant's perspective, the whole process looks pretty random.

2. Agreed. And also while transmitting from graduate division to department.

3. Yeah. I will do that next year.

4. People change year from year. Isn't that so?

Regarding your last point, i don't think so. Most of schools don't encourage you reapply the same program within 2-3 years. The department head usually assigns one prosper faculty to be the Ph.D program advisor, who usually will make the decision for Ph.D candidate recruiting. This prosper faculty member or program advisor doesn't change very frequently.

It's really not easy to get admitted by a decent B-school Ph.D program, but it's a good career path. Wish you good luck!

Whether it is a good career path or not depends on how well you fare in the B-school job market (4 to 6 years from now),  tenure review (10 to 12 years from now) and post-tenure review (15 to 17 years from now). It is difficult to tell now.

Regarding the last point, are you referring to the PhD coordinator or something like that? If so, you are probably right. But what I mean is that the applicant change from year to year.

Reapply only if you have big changes, such as higher scores, advanced degree or more research experiences

Dear Daxia345,

thanks for the advice but I think may be difficult to follow for the following reasons:

(1) Higher scores = not possible because I have a good enough score (740), which lasts for 5 years

(2) advanced degree = already got one master degree so good enough, more advanced and it will be PhD!!!

(3) More research experiences = well, that depends on what constitutes as research experiences........must be documented in the form of professors' recommendations or journal papers???....these sort of things are beyond my control....

       (A) you can work for a prof and he need not give you a good reco...by the way, did you get recommendations from 牛教授???

       (B) you can submit to journal and the editor can reject you

       (C) go to conferences?...higher chances since conferences are easier to get in...but it costs money.....生活费不容易钻呀。。。。我是穷小子一个

so what else? Would appreciate if you can offer a solution that help me to enhance my research experience but is (1) not costly and (2) more certain
