I believe they did it randomly. 10000 applicant * 3 = 30000 recommenders. Adcom do not have adequate resources for that - unless you lie in your application package and they begin to feel suspicious. In other words, as long as you present a true self, you ass is covered safely.

Most business schools will perform reference check on a random basis after you accept their offers.

How did they contact the recommender? by email ? phone?or just thanks card? I heard that some schools would send a card to recommenders. If you are admitted, official check comes

有些学校可能会email给你的推荐人来确认推荐信是否是推荐人写的

还有的学校会在email里面给个链接让你的推荐人添一些表格，其中会涉及一些推荐信中的细节来确认是不是推荐人给你写的推荐信，但是这种情况不是很多。

电话联系的可能性很少。
