Duke: Marketing and Health Care; Duke U's ranking is much better than that of U. of Michigan and U. of Virginia - but remember that it is the ranking of undergraduate. Michigan: Operation Management while it is strong across all the business disciplines. -- I also agree that Michigan Ross has a slightly better ranking. Darden: General Management. -- you might argue that Duke and Michigan also top the ranking of General Management. but please look at their curriculums deeply and also consider Darden's case method. If you want to do IBD jobs, Michigan and Darden are much better than Duke. For consulting jobs, these three are at the same level. Darden might be the top 15 school that Chinese undervalue most. Frankly speaking, Darden's placement of Chinese ppl is excellent compared with its peer schools. Reasons: 1) case method improves Chinese ppl's English ability significantly;2) smaller class size (300 vs. 400-500 at Duke and Michigan), less competition; 3) fewer mainland Chinese (7-8 vs. 20-30 at Duke and Michigan), less competition. Just my two cents.
No doubt Duke has better reputation in health care management, while Michigan is also among the top in this category. It is not difficult to find out by either finding the recruiters in health care industry go for these two schools or looking at the ranking of their medical schools (actually this ranking is the source of the reputation).
It's really a hard call for these 3 if you like general management. It's especially difficult to choose between Duke and Michigan, coz these two are too similar in many areas. Don't only lean on the case method as a standard to choose school, after all, Darden is not Harvard. Besides, every school uses a lot cases. In Michigan, even those so called lecture courses still have many cases need to be read and discussed.
I can't say anything accurate about Duke. While as a current Michigan student, I can say that Michigan really has very good professors in Strategy, Marketing and Accounting (I didn't use Finance here, because these professors belong to Accounting department) , not the traditional known Operations (We have good professors, while not as many as in those 3 departments). And I guess it's the reason that I end up with having a lot strategy and accounting (finance) courses even my focus is Operations.
Talking about numbers of Chinese in the class, you may have less competition from your peers, while you have less network advantage at the same time.
Choose school based on your interest is very important, as you will find out the schools are reputable for their strengths for some reasons, even the schools would like to announce them as well-rounded in all discipline. |
