January-entry applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis within each round. Therefore, candidates who apply earlier within each round put themselves in the best possible position to receive a decision ahead of, and no later than, the deadlines listed above.

We recommend applying as soon as you can to ensure you have ample time to arrange logistics such as housing, travel, and visas (if applicable). Those who submit and complete their applications earlier in the process may also be at a competitive advantage due to the rolling nature of the review process.

To be considered for a particular August round, your application must be completed by 12:00pm Eastern Time (ET) on the deadline date for the round in which you apply. Your letter of recommendation and application fee must be submitted by the deadline for your application to be considered complete.  
If your application is not completed by the deadline for the current round, it will be rolled into the next available application round in the current cycle for consideration.
Please note that if you would like to be included in priority consideration for institutional funding your application must be completed by the Round 1 or Round 2 deadline.

August Entry
About 70 percent of our full-time MBA students begin their studies in the fall term. After mandatory orientation in the second half of August, regular classes begin in September. Most August-entry students complete a summer internship between their second and third terms.
The August-entry applications are reviewed in three rounds. While applications will not be reviewed until after each deadline, it is always helpful to apply well before the deadline to ensure all components are received on time. Deposit amounts vary by round. Please review the Deposits page for more information.  
If you and your partner are both applying in the same year, we strongly encourage you to apply in the same round so that you will know if your partner has been admitted by the time you have to accept or decline your offer of admission.
January Entry
Students who do not want or need a formal summer internship may consider beginning their MBA studies in January and completing their second semester of classes during the summer. A January start may be ideal for students who wish to remain in the same industry after graduation or pursue entrepreneurial interests. About 30 percent of our students enter in January.

Essays
Applicants must complete two short answer questions and three essays.
Short Answer Question: What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? (50 characters maximum)
January Short Answer Question: Why do you prefer the January-entry term? (50 characters maximum)
Examples of possible responses:
  • “Work in business development for a media company.”
  • “Join a strategy consulting firm.”
  • “Launch a data-management start-up.”

Essay 1
Through your resume and recommendation, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next three to five years and what is your long-term dream job? (500 words)
Essay 2
The Phillips Pathway for Inclusive Leadership (PPIL) is a co-curricular program designed to provide students with the skills and strategies needed to develop as inclusive leaders.  Through various resources and programming, students explore and reflect on the following five inclusive leadership skills:  Mitigating Bias and Prejudice; Managing Intercultural Dialogue; Addressing Systemic Inequity; Understanding Identity and Perspective Taking; and Creating an Inclusive Environment.
Describe a time or situation when you had the need to utilize one of these five skills, and tell us the actions you took and the outcome. (250 words)
Essay 3
We believe Columbia Business School is a special place with a collaborative learning environment in which students feel a sense of belonging, agency, and partnership--academically, culturally, and professionally.
How would you co-create your optimal MBA experience at CBS? Please be specific. (250 words)
Optional Essay
If you wish to provide further information or additional context around your application to the Admissions Committee, please upload a brief explanation of any areas of concern in your academic record or personal history. This does not need to be a formal essay. You may submit bullet points. (Maximum 500 Words)
Deferred Enrollment Program
Deferred Enrollment candidates will answer two short essay questions instead of the essays listed above. Questions for the 2025 application cycle to be announced.
