Anybody can explain why A is wrong?

The western world's love affair with chocolate is well-documented; few people have been known to have tasted it for the first time without requesting more.

Key is (D) few people have been known to taste it

I have no clue why A is wrong!

885-B19.   http://forum.chasedream.com/dispbbs.asp?boardid=23&id=21328

Balzac drank more than fifty cups of coffee a day and died of caffeine poisoning; furthermore, caffeine did not seem to bother Samuel Johnson, the great writer and lexicographer, who was reported to have drunk twenty-five cups of tea at one sitting.

(A) furthermore, caffeine did not seem to bother

(B) however, caffeine did not seem to bother

(C) however, caffeine did not seem to have bothered

(D) furthermore, caffeine did not seem to have botheredB

(E) in addition, caffeine did not seem to bother

I agree with B. There’s been lots discussion going on about answer C—my opinion is:  “Did not seem to have bother” poses a sense that “seemed” (past tense) happens first and then “have bothered” later , thus, making the time sequence illogical.

Am I right about this??

4. In June, 1981, six teenagers in the village of Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, claimed to have had visions of the Virgin Mary, who they say has continued to appear to them over the ensuing years.
(A) claimed to have had visions of the Virgin Mary, who
(B) claimed to have visions of the Virgin Mary, whom
(C) claimed to have had visions of the Virgin Mary, whom
(D) claimed to have visions of the Virgin Mary, who
(E) had claimed to have had visions of the Virgin Mary, whom

答案A,agree.

My question is : why use whom but not who? I’ve attached the link of discussions and I believe the correct answer should be C, not A. Please help me clarify. Am I right?

9. It takes a deft balance between savings discipline, investment knowledge, risk taking, luck, and time to raise a million dollars through investments.
(A) It takes a deft balance between
(B) Deft balancing is needed between
(C) Deftly balanced, it takes
(D) It takes a deft balance of
(E) A deft balance is what one needs among

Correct: D I treated (deft balance of savings discipline) as one unit, along with the rests to (raise a million dollars through investments.

Am I correct ?

前两题是否定语气,是并未发生过的事,因此不能用to have p.p的时态,如果是肯定语气,一定要用to have p.p的时态;

第三题who they say has continued to appear to them over the ensuing years,A正确,they say是修饰who的,可省略,句子结构是who has continued to ...,who是主语成份,不能用whom,而且,现在who可以替代whom,如果实在是没有其它的错误的情况下,whom和who应该是最后被考虑的地方;

第四题:D是对的,a balance of是习惯用语,A,B中的between明显不对,C,E不但balance的用法不对,也改变乐句意~~

前两题是否定语气thanks! this is the key,是并未发生过的事,因此不能用to have p.p的时态,如果是肯定语气,一定要用to have p.p的时态;

第三题who they say has continued to appear to them over the ensuing years,A正确,they say是修饰who的----〉但我看来像是whom是they say 的宾语?

who they say has continued to appear to them over the ensuing years = who, they say, has continued to appear to them over the ensuing years

they say 是插入语,相当于however~~

The western world's love affair with chocolate is well-documented; few people have been known to taste(have tasted it) for the first time without requesting more. 完成时态错可能是因为两个完成时态重复,也可能是因为后面时间状语的缘故?I've done it for the first time比较别扭吧。

Balzac drank more than fifty cups of coffee a day and died of caffeine poisoning; however, caffeine did not seem to bother (have bothered) Samuel Johnson, the great writer and lexicographer, who was reported to have drunk twenty-five cups of tea at one sitting.

请指点

但若理解成  ,whom they say  (为第二个从句的主语有错么?)has continured to appear to them over the ensuing years.

Mary is a girl who likes to play baseball.

Mary is a girl whom we see> ..........Mary, whom we see likes to play baseball.

是不是few people have been known to had tasted it 比较对的关西?
