23. A Labor Department study states that the numbers of women employed outside the home grew by more than a thirty-five percent increase in the past decade and accounted for more than sixty-two percent of the total growth in the civilian work force.

Because a count of women employed outside the home at any given time will be expressed by a single number, the use of the plural noun numbers in choices A, B, and C is illogical. In A, the phrase grew by more than a thirty-five percent increase is redundant and wordy, since the sense of increase is implicit in the verb grew. In C and E, the passive verb forms were raised and was raised are inappropriate because there is no identifi­able agent responsible for the raising of the number of women employed. In choice E, was raised by ... increase is redun­dant. Choice D, which presents the comparison logically and idiomatically, is the best answer.

看过以前的讨论稿，也知道a number of, the numbers of的用法，但是对于Because a count of women employed outside the home at any given time will be expressed by a single number这句话的理解还是想make sure 一下：

是不是因为这个句子需要表达的是在外工作的妇女的数量所以才用the number of呀？

since the sense of increase is implicit in the verb grew这句话又应该怎么理解呢？说实话，对increase, raise, grew的用法我真的不是很清楚。如果有nn帮着解释一下就谢谢了。

正是如此啊，因为其他项的意思就有问题，numbers是复数名词，numbers of 和a number of 差不多，但大量的妇女grew 和 were raised 意思很奇怪，而数量increase 很合逻辑啊;此外increase, raise, grew都有增长增加的意思，与后面的名词increase连用是意思重复，ETS明令禁止的错误

任何时候出门工作的妇女都只可能是一个确定的数字，不可能有两个数字，用单数。

since the sense of increase is implicit in the verb grew：因为GREW已经暗含乐INCREASE的意思，重复~~

INCREASE, RAISE ,GROW的用法请查字典，RAISE只能用做VT，后要接宾语，而其它两个可以用作VI也可以用作VT~~

那么如果答案B改正number of women employed outside the home grew more than thirty-five percent是不是就对了呢？

number 一般跟increase，grow 的很少见啊，而且表示增长了多少应该是要加介词by的
