应该选a吧，b选项的the closer one 和a选项的一样，应该是the closer/ one came to town.

请问one指的是前面large area中的一部分吗？就是说这个人研究了曼彻斯特周围很大的地区，在他研究的这些地区里面离town越近的，空气越酸吗？

A是错的。错在The closer..., the more...两个句子是平衡的关系，所以语法应该是一样的。现在前面用了一般过去式，而后面却了过去将来式。丢失了平衡。GMAT非常注重平衡的。

one泛指人，没有问题，不需要有特别指代对象，有时候我们也用many就直接称呼人

one 泛指任意一个人，在这里并不是代词。

平衡关系中，时态不一定要完全一致，只需要相互对应就可以了。

A的前后时态并没有问题。一般过去时+would 或者一般现在时+will
