I am having a hard time understanding why "cutting-edge research" can be much better pursued in HKUST than in the other schools mentioned here.
My earlier comments were more on the placement side, and I was making those as an AP-to-be.
If you are good enough in research at SUNY-Buffalo or Syracuse University, you should have an almost assured chance of hitting a research school in North America, with numerous other schools for you to choose from in HK, Singapore, and Europe, not to mention the mainland of China. If you choose to be at HKUST, you will probably have to stay on in HK or even go back to the mainland; there is indeed a chance to join a school in North America, Australia, or Europe, but you would need to be exceptional in research.
Of course, if your ultimate goal is to stay with an institution in the mainland of China, there is not much difference between SUNY-Buffalo (or Syracuse University) and HKUST.
