The more time you spend on the essays, the better your essays. Period.
8 schools in one round, it sounds crazy to me. Also, when you plan your application, you should have found out the preferences of different schools. Columbia loves early applicants, it encourages applicants to apply as early as possible even though it has a rolling review process which means the review process will not start until certain date.
On the other hand, Wharton and Kellogg take 1st round and 2nd round applicants quite evenly. So you might want to perfect your essays before you submit them before the 2nd round deadline. I did ask wharton's admission officer in person about the differences between 1st and 2nd round. He asnwered: "There aren't any differences. Submit your application when you think it's ready."
