due to VS because of
复习GMAT以来的第一篇帖子献给小语法点SC重点考察的是逻辑和语意,但是却脱离不了句子结构和成分,毕竟结构承载含意,所以有些逻辑上会造成影响的词也要注意。
做题时遇到表达因果关系的问题,虽然答对,但是心里还是疑惑,所以来论坛搜集整理,并分享给大家。
原文出自gmatclub,先从情境中看它们的用法:
下面是一段对话:
A:.......meeting was canceled due to heavy storm that hit the coast yeasterday.....
B:.......really...but I thought that the meeting was canselled because of that heavy storm...
问题是:这两个词组可以互换吗?
答案是:No. ‘due to’ is used to modify nouns only. ‘Because of’ is used to modify verbs. Thus, these two expressions cannot be used interchangeably.
使用原则:
RULE 1: The expression ‘due to’ can only be used to modify nouns. Thus, you cannot use this expression to present reason for an action in the clause.
RULE 2: ‘Due to’ is correct if the sentence makes sense when you replace ‘due to’ with ’caused by’. If, it does not, then use of ‘due to’ is not correct.
Rule 3: The expression ‘because of’ is used to modify entire clauses. Thus, you can use this expression to present reason for an action in the clause.
注意:这里不是简单的due to后面能加什么不能加什么的问题,而是,due to修饰什么不修饰什么的问题。
