关于 comma-ing 的修饰问题

问题是关于 comma-ing 修饰问题，大量的题目都是 comma-ing 修饰主语，按照这个解释那么 traveling 应该是修饰 geologists use，但是这样逻辑上不符合。曼哈顿上说Generally, the agent of a COMMA + VERBing modifier is the NEAREST PRECEDING SUBJECT. 那么按照这个解释就是 comma+ing 形式具有临近原则，即，comma+ing 形式修饰最近的主语， traveling 就是应该修饰waves。 目前没有遇到其他特别的例子。大家如何考虑这个问题？我搜了很多帖子，大家有的说逻辑，有的说临近，也有反驳的声音。

我觉得这句话里 "(seismic waves) that originate in the earth’s crust and ricochet around its interior," 是离v+ing最近的句子，然后v+ing修饰这个从句和这个从句的主语seismic waves
