1. well, what I mean by flexibility is:
imageine you get a major in finance. it is not really quantitaitve.
some of the studetns in this major that are interested in quantitative finance / financial mathematics, they will take their elective courses in math/stat/cs make it a minor or even second major. this is their own business, and difference finance student may have difference minor / 2nd major (e.g. econ, marketing, psychology......)
UK bachelor are not that good in flexibility when compared to some other places.
2. it seems that you have no idea about what PhD Finance is.....or you have no idea what a MBA is about.
the suitable preparation for a PhD in Finance, especially when taking about quantitative one, is not something in the business / finance side, but a bachelor and/or master something within mathematics, statistics, and economics. a finance degree, not to mention a business degree, is next to useless in this preparation.
3. the logic of best MFE education is indeed, get some STEM students in, and teach them some knowledge about the market, and the mathematics behind. Those students are used to mathematical proofs, empirical analysis, programming for years already.
The logic is not to get some business student and teach them the math / programming.
My suggestion is, at least get VBA and MATLAB/R ready before Sept. VBA is easy, and is a basic assumption.
for MATLAB/R (they are very similar, just choose one of them randomly), find a course to follow somewhere. this should take a few months.
if you want to challenge yourself, consider a C++ course in the summer, like the one from Baurch MFE preparation one.
P.S. I dont really know (and care) what you mean by ucl is.......but applied math / stat / phy / whatever engineering should had taught and used some kind of scientific language in their bachelor extensive. If it is not the case, that means either the school is not good, or the program is not science / engineering enough. it is not necessary phyton / C++ / exactly the same language going to be useful, it is about the logic behind things like loops, matrix language, and etc skill. |
