Chicago 2006 MBA Application Toolbox

Chicago

Official website
http://gsb.uchicago.edu/fulltime/admissions/index.aspx

Class Size:
Approximately 550

Admissions
Chicago GSB is known for its intense debate of ideas, analytical rigor, and flexible curriculum rooted in fundamentals that will equip you with the skills to handle any business problem you face. You will be asked to challenge ideas and assumptions in order to stretch your mind, find new solutions, and defend them vigorously. You will learn how to think, not what to think. You will be transformed.

What We Look for in Prospective Students
Chicago GSB has long attracted students with more than solid work experience and high test scores—they have the vision and determination to shape the future of business. The Admissions Committee looks for people who have demonstrated the ability to succeed through work experience, academic endeavors and extracurricular or community service involvement. Our evaluation criteria are applied against three broad themes: our curriculum, our community, and your career.

The Committee also seeks applicants with leadership skills, demonstrated teamwork abilities, intellectual curiosity, superior communication skills, a clear career vision, an understanding of the value of an MBA, and why the Chicago GSB program is a good fit based on these characteristics and goals.

Successful applicants are able to articulate their “story” throughout the application process, demonstrating a strong sense of self-awareness. Elements of self-awareness include future goals and a path to achieve those goals, as well as how past experiences play a part in future plans.

Value of Diversity
The conviction that diversity enhances perspectives is a fundamental tenet of the Chicago MBA. We are strongly committed to fostering a vibrant, multicultural environment, which is why are the only top business school with resources exclusively dedicated to Diversity Affairs. We also have a multitude of of student-led groups that focus on diversity and cultural awareness which are a vital and thriving part of our program.

Non-Traditional Applicants
Because the Chicago MBA is the most flexible program of its kind, we attract students who work in a wide range of non-business, non-profit and military professions. These non-traditional applicants have studied medicine, law, liberal arts, engineering, and other fields outside the business world. We value the unique perspective a talented student with a “non-traditional” background brings to the GSB.

Early Career Applicants
Many prospective students struggle with the decision as to what point in their career they should pursue an MBA. At Chicago GSB, we do not have any minimum work experience requirements, and encourage candidates to apply when they have determined the time is right. Successful early career applicants have demonstrated a high potential for leadership, academic preparedness, community involvement, self awareness and are able to explain why now is the right time to pursue an MBA.

International Applicants
At Chicago GSB, more than 30% of our student body is comprised of International Students from more than 40 countries. We value the spectrum of interests, backgrounds, and professional experiences that these students bring to the GSB community.

How to Apply
Chicago GSB admits new students into the Full-Time MBA Program in the autumn quarter only. We use a system of three application deadlines, with early applicants rolled over for consideration at subsequent deadlines.

Application Deadlines

  • Round One: October 26, 2005
Decisions released by January 11, 2006

  • Round Tw January 4, 2006
Decisions released by March 22, 2006

  • Round Three: March 15, 2006
Decisions released by May 17, 2006

Your application must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. (CST/Chicago time) on the day of the deadline in order to be considered for an application round. This includes receipt of all online and mailed-in materials. Applications submitted after a deadline will automatically be considered in the next round as long as all materials are included with the application.

Applying Online
Most applicants use our online application system, which we recommend. The system includes step-by-step instructions for completing the application online, including the process for submitting transcripts, essays and letters of recommendation. You may make changes and edits to an application at any time prior to submission. Registration and creation of a username and password are required to begin the online application.

Applying by Mail
If you prefer not to apply online, download the application in PDF format. Please submit all application components together.

Evaluation Criteria
The Admissions Committee looks for people who have demonstrated the ability to succeed through work experience, academic endeavors and extracurricular or community service involvement. Our evaluation criteria are applied against three broad themes: our curriculum, our community, and your career.

Completed Application
A complete application (submitted either online or by paper) includes:

  • Responses to required personal background questions

  • Essays

  • Detailed resumé

  • Transcripts from all post-secondary educational institutions from which you have earned a degree, either official documents or a self-reported transcript

  • GMAT scores

  • TOEFL or IELTS scores (international applicants only)

  • Two letters of recommendation

  • $200 Application Fee

Admissions Interviews
Interviews will be granted on an invitation-only basis after evaluation of a submitted application. A candidate who receives an invitation will have only one interview. Interviews are conducted by admissions staff, students or alumni. They are held on campus or in a location convenient for the prospective student. All interviews, regardless of who conducts them, receive equal weight in the evaluation process.

International Applicants
An international applicant is anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident at the time of application to the GSB. International applicants should submit their application as soon as possible to allow ample time to apply for a student visa if admitted; we strongly recommend that international applicants apply by the Round Two deadline.

Applying to Special Programs
The International MBA, Dual Professional Degrees, as well as the International Joint Degree programs require a special application process. Please refer to the relevant program for specific information.

Admission Decisions
The Full-Time MBA Program matriculates approximately 550 students each autumn quarter. The Admissions Committee looks for evidence of an applicant’s potential to succeed in a demanding academic program and a professional career after graduation.

Our selection process emphasizes leadership potential, strong academic ability, and personal qualities and characteristics. Additionally, the Admissions Committee aspires to create a class with diverse backgrounds and global perspectives to add to the richness of the Chicago GSB community.

All decisions are released through the online application system.

Decision Types
Admission to Chicago GSB
We offer admission to applicants who present a solid match between their aspirations and the Chicago GSB values. Applicants who are admitted will be required to submit official transcripts and test scores. Additional details will be available on the admitted student website, to which access will be granted after admission, and in the admission packet mailed to all admitted students.

Waitlist
Each year, we aim to build a class with the highest potential for leadership and success. In a pool of very talented candidates, with diverse backgrounds and interests, we are not able to accept all admissible candidates in a given application round. The waitlist at Chicago GSB is used to gauge the pool of candidates in a subsequent round before offering a final decision to those candidates placed on the waitlist.

Waitlisted candidates can expect to remain on the waitlist until at least the next round of decisions is released, though in a small number of cases applicants may remain on the waitlist for more than one decision round. A few points to note about waitlisted candidates:

  • We do not rank our waitlist.

  • We are not able to offer waitlist feedback.

  • Applicants on the waitlist are welcome to send updated materials only if there have been developments since the time of the initial application.

  • If we require additional materials, applicants will be notified.

Applicants placed on the waitlist who wish to withdraw their application, are asked to email admissions@ChicagoGSB.edu with the subject “Removal from Waitlist.”

Denied Admission and Feedback
Unfortunately, we are unable to admit the vast majority of the applicant pool in any given year. Because we know that considerable time and effort was devoted to the preparation of the Chicago GSB admissions application, we offer re-applicant feedback to applicants planning to re-apply.

We offer Re-aapplicant feedback beginning in mid-May and continuing through August. Appointments are scheduled on a first come, first served basis and are not conducted from September through early May due to the demands on our schedule during the season. Additional information on scheduling re-applicant feedback will be emailed directly to all denied applicants.

Re-Applications
If you were not successful in the admissions process, and are interested in re-applying to Chicago GSB, we encourage you to do so. Your application will be kept on file for two years; you will not have to resubmit transcripts and test scores unless there is updated information.

Successful applicants in the re-application process have demonstrated growth through career progress, academic preparation, and/or community involvement. If you had a feedback session with an admissions committee member about your denied admission, it is strongly recommended that you address the areas of concern or ideas for improvement that were discussed.

Re-applicants are required to complete the full application for 2006 enrollment due to the number of changes in the application this year. You will be able to submit your application online, including personal essays and the application fee, beginning in August.

If you prefer to send in your application by mail, you can download the application in PDF format, complete it using Adobe Acrobat, and submit it with transcripts and recommendations.

We also require two letters of recommendation for each re-applicant. You can use the same recommenders as with your previous application. However, due to the number of new questions relating to recommendations, we suggest the letters be re-submitted in the new format.

International Re-Applicants
We have a number of new policies in relation to English language testing. If your TEOFL or IELTS score dates from more than two years prior to the submission date of your application, you must retake the examination. Official scores must be submitted before the application deadline.

International Applicants
At Chicago GSB, more than 30% of our student body is comprised of International Students, allowing for a diverse experience for all students enrolled. Our students come from more than 40 countries, enriching the experiences of all students enrolled at the GSB. The spectrum of interests, backgrounds, and professional experiences that students bring to the GSB community add to the MBA experience that you will have at Chicago GSB.

If you need to apply for a student visa in order to study in the United States, we advise you to apply in Rounds One or Two. An early application will allow you sufficient time to secure a student visa should you be admitted.

Academic Record
All international applicants are required to hold a college or university degree equivalent to a four-year American baccalaureate degree. In light of the Bologna Accord, Chicago GSB will also accept all three-year international degrees to fulfill the undergraduate prerequisite for application to the GSB.

Transcripts
You will be asked to either submit official academic records or provide a self-reported transcript for all schools attended. If you submit self-reported records, you will be asked to provide the official documents upon admission. Official records are defined as original documents issued by the institution and bearing the actual (not photocopied) signature of the registrar and the institutional seal. Records issued only once by institutions should be photocopied and certified as official copies either by school officials or legal authorities such as embassies or a notary public. Please do not send the original of an academic record that cannot be replaced.

If academic records and diplomas are not issued in English by the institution, you must submit both the official record and an authorized English translation. All records must show the dates of enrollment, courses taken, units of credit, your marks or ratings in each subject, and, if available, your rank in the total class or group.

The institutional grading scale or other standards of evaluation, including minimum passing and failing marks, and definition of grades between them, should also be included on or with official records.

English Language Examinations
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required of international applicants whose native language is not English. An international applicant, however, is exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement if he/she has earned an undergraduate degree or post-graduate degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction. An applicant is also eligible if he/she is a citizen or permanent resident of a country where English is an official language. Applicants should indicate the exemption in the application where indicated.

Scores
The minimum TOEFL score required for admission depends on whether applicants take the computerized test or paper exam, which are scored differently. On the computerized exam, applicants must score a minimum total score of at least 250. For the paper-based version, the minimum total score is 600. The minimum IELTS score required for admission is an overall score of 7. Applicants who score below these minimums cannot be considered for admission and should retake the test before submitting an application.

TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two years. Your score will be considered expired if the test was taken more than two years prior to submission of your application. If your score has expired, you must retake the examination and submit the official scores before the application deadline.

Q&A:
VISTING CAMPUS
Q: Can we visit the campus without an appointment?
A: We offer a visitor program throughout most of the school year. We normally ask that you schedule a campus visit two weeks in advance. However, we understand that at times your plans may bring you to Chicago with little advance notice, so we do welcome walk-ins.
Campus visit program details
Maps and directions

Q: Do you black out dates when campus visits are not available?
A: Yes. Because current students are actively involved in many facets of our visitor program, visits are not available during some breaks and exam periods. Please feel free to come to campus during these times to look around and stop by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. There may be few students and faculty members on campus during these periods, and we may be able to connect you with one.

If you are interested in meeting with an admissions counselor, we would be happy to have you drop by and say hello. Please come to the GSB's Hyde Park Center at 5807 South Woodlawn Avenue. Tell the receptionist at the front that you would like to speak with someone to answer any questions that you might have regarding the application and admissions process.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS
Q: What are your minimum requirements pertaining to GPA and the GMAT?
A: The admission committee values the diverse experiences and accomplishments each student brings to the GSB community. Therefore, we do not have cut-off levels for grades or GMAT scores required for admission. View the class profile in more detail.

Q: I have an advanced degree. How is that viewed?
A: Many applicants have advanced degrees. Chicago GSB's flexible curriculum allows you to build on your existing knowledge and choose more rigorous courses, rather than repeating what you have already mastered. In evaluating candidates, we seek those who show a strong desire for the GSB educational experience, so be sure to explain your reason for earning an additional degree in your application essays.

Q: What about work experience?
A: The Admission Committee looks for quality of work experience, not just quantity. Applicants should highlight skills developed, contributions they have made to organizations, and leadership roles. Typically, our students have three to four years' work experience before applying to Chicago GSB. Students find that having work experience as a frame of reference enhances classroom learning. Equally important, recruiters view pre-MBA work experience as an asset, which maximizes your career opportunities after school. View the class profile in more detail.

APPLICATION MATERIALS
Q: How do I apply?
A: Complete the application online. It is available in August and is posted until the third deadline.

Q: What are your application deadlines?
A: Consult the Fast Facts page for details on when you should take the GMAT and deadlines for admission.

Q: What should I know about the GMAT?
A: 1) The GMAT Institute code for Chicago GSB is 1832. You must supply this code to have your scores forwarded directly to us.
2) Your GMAT score is just one of the criteria we evaluate. While we don't have a cut-off score for consideration, we do recommend that you try to make all areas of your application as strong as possible.
3) If you score lower than you like, taking the test again can be a way to strengthen your application. The Admissions Committee looks favorably on taking the GMAT more than once, although we do not recommend taking the test more than three times. The highest of your valid scores will be considered the official one.
4) It is best to prepare for the GMAT well before the test date, so you are not struggling to take the test, write your MBA application, and manage your busy life all at once.
5) The GMAT score is valid if the test was taken less than five years before the submission date of your application. The test date makes no difference in the assessment of an application as long as it was within five years.

Q: Are late test scores accepted?
A: No. GMAT test scores may be self-reported via the online application. Upon admission to Chicago GSB, applicants must have official test scores sent to the Office of Admissions for verification. The offer of admission is conditional until the official score report is received and verified.

Q: What kind of transcript is needed for an application?
A: We need an official transcript, an official copy of a transcript or a self-reported transcript to be evaluated for admission. An official transcript will be required if you are admitted.

Q: What if I can't get a copy of my diploma?
A: Please send a notarized copy of your graduation certificate along with your application. You will be required to bring us the original certificate upon acceptance into the program.

Q: What if I don't want to use my current employer as a reference?
A: We understand the concerns about using a current employer. College professors, clients, and other supervisors can be used as references if you are uncomfortable with requesting one from your current employer. Your reference should know you and your work well enough to tell us about your abilities and address the areas indicated on the reference form. If you do not use a current employer, please comment on the reasons in the optional essay regarding "other information."

Q: Where do I send my supplemental information?
A: Your transcripts, letters of recommendation, and other information should be sent to:

Office of Admissions and Financial Aid
The University of Chicago
Graduate School of Business
5807 South Woodlawn Avenue
Chicago IL 60637

AFTER YOU APPLY
Q: How do I know if my application is complete?
A: Your status can be checked online through our application system. We will notify you via email if anything is missing from your application. This includes scores (TOEFL/IELTS, GMAT), letters of recommendation, transcripts, self-reported transcripts or application fee. If your application is incomplete, we will give you a deadline for submitting the additional materials submitted. Once an completed application is forwarded to the Admissions Ccommitte, we will send an email.

Q: How do I check the status of my application?
A: You can check the status of your application in our online application system. Log in with the same username and password that you did when you were applying. Instead of displaying all of your application pages, the portal will show the status of your application in the review process.

Q: What if my application status has not changed for a long period of time?
A: We are in the process of confirming that we have all the required information to evaluate your application. Typically, it takes us a few weeks to compile all the data. If we are missing any information we will notify you.

Q: Do you provide feedback on why applications were denied?
A: Yes. You will be notifed about the timeline to schedule an appointment for feedback, if you have been denied admission. Feedback sessions are limited and are on a first come, first served basis.

Q: Can I transfer or waive classes?
A: All Chicago GSB students in the Full-Time Program are required to complete 21 courses to graduate. The GSB does not accept transfer credits from other institutions. We also do not waive any of the total number of courses required. However, our extremely flexible curriculum offers options for fulfilling even the three required foundation core courses. You will not find yourself forced to repeat courses you have already mastered.
Learn more about curriculum requirements

Q: How do I reapply?
A: You may download the reapplication form from our website.

AFTER YOU ARE ADMITTED
Q. How will I learn what to do after I am admitted?
A. We will send you weekly e-mail messages with important information on a variety of subjects; you will receive printed materials in the mail; and there is an entire admitted students website to which you will be given access if accepted to Chicago GSB.

Q: Where do I send my deposit check?
A: Please make your check or money order, in U.S. funds, payable to "University of Chicago-GSB". Send it to:

Office of Admissions and Financial Aid
The University of Chicago
Graduate School of Business
5807 South Woodlawn Avenue
Chicago, IL 60637

INTERNATIONAL PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
Q: What are your requirements for international applicants?
A: All international applicants are required to hold a college or university degree equivalent to a four-year American baccalaureate degree. In light of the Bologna Accord, Chicago GSB will also accept all three-year international degrees to fulfill the undergraduate prerequisite for application to the GSB.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required of international applicants whose native language is not English.

Q: Can I have the TOEFL or IELTS waived?
A: An international applicant, however, is exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement if he/she has earned an undergraduate degree or post-graduate degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction. An applicant is also eligible if he/she is a citizen or permanent resident of a country where English is an official language. Applicants should indicate the exemption in the application where indicated

Q: Do you offer financial aid to international students?
A: Financial aid information is sent to prospective students upon admission to the program. You will not need to apply for scholarships or loans until such time. Chicago GSB offers two loan programs for international students - one that requires a co-signer from the U.S. and one that does not. All ADMITTED international students will be directed to a web site to request a loan application. The loans can be used for the I-20 visa application process.

FINANCIAL AID
Q: Please tell me more about financial aid.
A: All ADMITTED students are automatically considered for a merit-based scholarship. All ADMITTED U.S. citizens and U.S. Permanent Residents will be mailed a financial aid application packet. All admitted International Students will receive an email directing them to a website to request a loan application. For more information, view our detailed cost and financial aid information.

DEGREE ALTERNATIVES
Q: I am interested in taking a few graduate level business classes, but not necessarily in completing an MBA. What do I need to do?
A: To attend classes in this way, you may enroll in the Graduate Student at Large Program offered through the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Education.

Q: Tell me about your Dual and Joint Degree programs.
A: Chicago GSB offers a joint MBA/MA degree in international relations or in area studies (choose from East Asia, South Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East) To apply, candidates MUST use the MBA/MA application available as part of the GSB's online application. You will receive one admissions decision.

Chicago GSB students are able to pursue dual professional degrees, where they earn a professional degree from one of the University of Chicago's other graduate schools while enrolled at the GSB. Options are:

Harris Graduate School of Public Policy (MBA/MPP)
University of Chicago Law School (MBA/JD)
Pritzker School of Medicine (MBA/MD)
School of Social Service Administration (MBA/MA)
Applicants must obtain and submit applications separately to both the GSB and to the other professional school, and will receive separate decisions from each school. Contact the school for an application and admissions procedures.

Q: Please tell me more about your International MBA (IMBA).
A: The IMBA program at Chicago GSB is a flexible, yet specialized, degree designed to make you competitive at the global level. The IMBA supplements the strengths of the Full-Time, Evening or Weekend MBA program with coursework focusing on international business issues, proficiency in a regional language, and one academic term abroad through our International Business Exchange Program (IBEP). Students are admitted to the Full-Time, Evening or Weekend MBA program, and declare their intent to pursue an IMBA soon after matriculation. Although each IMBA student creates a unique global curriculum, as a group they share goals, skills, and interests that forge a unique esprit de corps and lasting relationships.

Q: Do you offer a one-year program?
A: Chicago GSB does not offer a one-year MBA. The University of Chicago does offer a one-year master's degree in financial mathematics. This is an intensive quantitative program designed for people who want to develop financial models or work in derivatives.

Q: Do you have a distance-learning program?
A. We do not offer our degrees online through distance learning. At this time we believe technology-mediated courses cannot match the stimulating learning experience you'll find here in face-to-face interactions in and out of the classroom.

Q: How is the Part-Time Program different from the Full-Time Program?
A: All of our programs offer the same degree, and courses taught by the same world-class faculty. Our Evening and Weekend MBA programs feature the same flexible curriculum as the Full-Time MBA, yet allows students to earn their MBA without leaving their jobs for full-time study. Another part-time option is our Executive MBA program designed for managers with 10 years of professional experience. The Executive MBA features a fixed, cohort-based curriculum and international exchange sessions among the Chicago, London, and Singapore classes.

The Evening, Weekend, and Executive MBA North America programs are housed at the our Gleacher Center in downtown Chicago. These programs have their own admissions process and administrative offices.

Q: What if I am not sure if I want an MBA or PhD?
A: Our PhD Program is research-oriented and primarily intended to prepare graduates for a career in academics, although some go on to work in the business sector. You should consider your career goals and compare program information carefully.

Q: May I apply for more than one program?
A: No, you may only apply to one Chicago GSB program at a time. We ask that you wait two academic quarters before you apply to another program.

CAREER SERVICES
Q: Tell me more about the career services available.
A: Our MBA Career Services office offers a wide range of services to help you refine your career goals and plan an effective job search. These include individual coaching sessions, resume reviews, interview practice, and much more. Career Services actively seeks job postings and arranges extensive on-campus interviewing for both permanent positions and internships. Each year more than 300 recruiters actively recruit students from the Chicago GSB. Our recruiter base is diverse, representing numerous industries and functional areas of business.

Our most recent placement report is available on our web site. This report includes a list of recruiters who visited campus and who hired from the graduating and intern classes.

WAITLIST APPLICANTS
Q: How many applicants are placed on the Waitlist?
A: The number of applicants placed on the Waitlist will vary from year to year and from deadline to deadline.

Q: What are my chances of being admitted?
A: Every application is considered on its own merit and within the context of the entire applicant pool. While we cannot guarantee nor predict your acceptance, we can say that there are a number of applicants who are admitted from the Waitlist each year. The percentage of applicants admitted from the Waitlist varies from year to year.

Q: Should I come to campus to state my case?
A: We do not encourage applicants to come to campus to state their cases for admission. However, you can schedule a campus visit to learn more about Chicago GSB.

Q: Can I speak with the Admission staff regarding my application?
A: Because we know that considerable time and effort was devoted to the preparation of the Chicago GSB admissions application, we offer re-applicant feedback to applicants planning to re-apply.

We offer Re-aapplicant feedback beginning in mid-May and continuing through August.

Q: Should I send additional information?
A: Although not required, the Admissions Committee will be happy to consider any additional information that you would like to submit. Any material you send should add insight into your qualifications for the GSB beyond what was presented in your original application.

All additional information should be sent to:

Office of Admissions and Financial Aid
The University of Chicago
Graduate School of Business
5807 South Woodlawn Avenue
Chicago, IL 60637

Attn: Waitlist

Q: When is the deadline to have my information submitted to the committee?
A: Round 1 applicants should send their information by March 4th.
Round 2 applicants should send their information by May 6th.

Q: Should I take the GMAT again?
A: If you feel that your current score does not reflect your true ability, you should retake the GMAT.
