You probably don't even need to say your career goals. What is wrong with Yale? They want to boost the number of the applications?

In my memory, last year Yale requires at leat 4 essays.

I still can't believe Yale is so desparate to improve its ranking, since number of applications is just only one of the many criteria. Any other speculations?

another explaination is that yale already has TOO MANY applicants.  if yale don't simplify the application processes and relieve the burden to read thousands of essays, the SOM will have to double or triple the admission committee so that every essay will be read by someone.
