Tuck 2006 MBA Application Toolbox

Dartmouth (Tuck)

Official website
http://www.tuck.dartmouth.edu/admissions/index.html

Class Size:
Approximately 240

Evaluation Criteria
What makes a candidate successful? There is no formula for admission to Tuck. It is impossible to predict a candidate's chances of admission solely by looking at his or her academic record and test scores. Each decision hinges on the interplay of five principal factors:

Demonstrated Academic Excellence: Tuck seeks applicants who possess outstanding academic abilities and intellectual curiosity, and who will be actively engaged in the educational process. Given the analytical rigor of the Tuck curriculum, we pay special attention to each applicant's ability to master quantitative concepts. There is no particular course of study required to apply.

Demonstrated Leadership: Tuck looks for applicants who have been leaders in a variety of settings: extracurricular activities at college or university, the workplace, or the community. We assess leadership potential by looking at experiences, accomplishments, and letters of recommendation.

Demonstrated Accomplishments: Tuck seeks candidates who have the passion to make a significant impact in the classroom, in the business world, and in society. Candidates we accept do not simply go through the motions of attending school, working, or joining organizations—they have put their heart and soul into helping make those institutions better in some tangible way.

Interpersonal Skills: At Tuck, we believe that strong interpersonal skills are essential for success as a leader and as a team member. Through the interview process, we try to get a sense of each candidate's personality and communication skills. We also look for quality and clarity of thought in written answers and essays.

Diversity of Background and Experience: Tuck seeks a variety of candidates who will bring a range of backgrounds and perspectives to the classroom and the Tuck community. The admissions committee works diligently to select the most qualified students who will thrive in, contribute to, and benefit from the active co-curricular life at Tuck.

How to Apply
Gaining admission to Tuck is competitive. Last year, the admissions committee had the challenge of selecting a target class size of 240 outstanding students from a highly qualified pool of more than 1,700 applications from around the world. Each year, the number of talented applicants far exceeds the number of offers we can extend. The admissions committee spends hours reading and re-reading applications. We compare every applicant to the pool and try to determine which candidates will be the best match with Tuck.

Nevertheless, don't let these application statistics intimidate you. If you have been successful academically and professionally and believe that Tuck is the right place for you, we encourage you to apply. We also encourage qualified applicants from all types of backgrounds to apply, including those who might not have traditional business experience.

Final words of advice: In completing your application, be yourself, rather than attempting to match an "ideal" candidate.

Below are the components of the Tuck application process:

  • Application form

  • Self-reported GMAT results

  • Self-reported TOEFL results (if applicable)

  • Self-reported transcript

  • Essay questions

  • Confidential Statement of Qualifications

  • Interviews

  • Nonrefundable application fee

  • Statement of Honesty and Integrity

  • Nondiscrimination Policy

Application Form
Applicants must apply via our online application.

If you are unable to apply online, please call the admissions office.

Tuck requires that each applicant complete a Tuck application form (the exception is for applicants who apply via the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management—they must instead complete the Consortium application. For more information, see the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management section on the Important Dates page of this website).

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Tuck makes its applications available in alternative formats for applicants with special needs. For more information, please contact Nancy Pompian at 603-646-2014.

Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)
Tuck requires every applicant to take and self-report results (scores and percentiles) from the GMAT. Results should not be more than five years old. If you have taken the GMAT multiple times, please report only your highest two scores. For information on how to register to take the GMAT, please visit www.mba.com. Please use Tuck code 3351 on your GMAT exam. After January 1, 2006, use code 204-NH-64 to direct your scores to Tuck.

Your application will not be considered complete without GMAT scores and percentiles reported on the application. You may take the GMAT up to the day before submitting your application. In those instances, you should submit your preliminary scores and forward any score revisions and your AWA score and percentile as soon as you receive them. We do not allow substitution or replacement of test scores after an application has been submitted.

Tuck accepts students with a range of GMAT scores. There is no minimum requirement. Nevertheless, if you do not score well on any part of the GMAT or you do not feel that score reflects your abilities, we encourage you to consider taking the exam again in an effort to improve your score.

If offered admission to Tuck, your self-reported GMAT test scores will be verified. Tuck reserves the right to rescind an offer of admission should any misrepresentation or omission occur.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
All non-native English speakers must take and self-report results from the TOEFL. The TOEFL requirement is waived for applicants who have recently lived for at least three years in an English-speaking country or received a degree from an institution outside the U.S. where instruction is in English. Results should not be more than two years old. If you have taken the TOEFL multiple times, please report only your highest score. We do not allow substitution or replacement of test scores after an application has been submitted. For information on how to register for the TOEFL, please visit the TOEFL website at www.toefl.org. Please use Tuck code 3351 on your TOEFL exam.

If offered admission to Tuck, your self-reported TOEFL test scores will be verified. Tuck reserves the right to rescind an offer of admission should any misrepresentation or omission occur.

Self-Reported Transcript
Information regarding your academic record must be reported by you on the self-reported transcript form, a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet which can be downloaded from our website. You are required to include on the self-reported transcript form the same information contained on the official transcript from the institution(s) where you obtained your undergraduate (bachelor's or first) degree and any graduate degrees. This information includes course names, course numbers, dates, grades, courses taken pass/fail, incomplete courses, and dropped courses. You will also be asked to provide information regarding courses taken outside of your undergraduate institution (transfer courses, study abroad programs, cross-registration).

If admitted to Tuck, you will need to provide us with official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate courses taken, as well as any transfer courses, study-abroad programs, or post college nondegree courses, within 30 days of paying your enrollment deposit. If your institution has a policy of issuing only one official transcript, you may submit a copy validated by your school, a foreign affairs ministry, the Fulbright Commission, or a U.S. consular official. Students whose transcripts are not written in English must have their academic records translated and sent with an original copy. Tuck reserves the right to rescind an offer of admission should any misrepresentation or omission occur.

Essay Questions
The essay questions provide you with an opportunity to help the admissions committee gain greater insight into you as a potential member of the Tuck community. Please be clear, succinct, forthright, and thoughtful in your responses. Additionally, we ask that you share what you truly feel, as opposed to writing what you think the admissions committee would like to read. There are no right or wrong answers. We do not allow substitution or replacement of essay responses after an application has been submitted.

Reapplicants should also complete the reapplicant essay. Tuck expects that the work contained in the essays is completely accurate and exclusively your own. Use of professional essay-writing services violates Tuck's admissions policies.

Confidential Statement of Qualifications (CSQ)
We require that you submit two CSQ forms. The most useful evaluations are from people who are able to speak with certainty about your leadership, maturity, team orientation, analytical skills, and interpersonal skills. If you are currently employed, we prefer to receive a CSQ from your direct supervisor or some other person who knows you well and is in a position to judge your professional performance and leadership. If you are unable to provide a CSQ from a direct supervisor, please explain why in the optional essay section. If you are a college senior, submit one CSQ from a professor and one CSQ from a summer or former employer or someone who knows you through a leadership role. Generally, unless you are a college senior or very recent graduate, we do not find CSQs from professors to be helpful in our evaluations.

Please contact your evaluators well in advance to give them sufficient time to write and return their evaluations by the application round deadline for which you are applying. Given the importance we place on CSQs, we do not review any application until we have received CSQs from both of the evaluators you listed in your application. If your CSQs are received after the deadline for submission, your application will not be considered until the next round. It is your responsibility to make sure that your recommenders are aware of the deadlines and to ensure both CSQs have been submitted. If you would like to make any changes to the evaluators you listed, please notify the admissions office in writing.

We encourage you to use the online CSQ form, which allows us to review your file more rapidly. If you must use a printed version, you may download a copy of the CSQ form, which is part of the application located on this website. You may need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this document. Please make sure your evaluators use your full name on the form. Any supplemental information should be written on institutional letterhead with the evaluator's title, address, telephone number, and email address (if applicable) clearly indicated. Tuck reserves the right to contact recommenders. Each downloaded and printed form should be returned t Admissions-CSQ, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, 100 Tuck Hall, Hanover, NH 03755-9000, USA.

Interviews
Since Tuck's educational approach and community are unique, we strongly encourage all applicants to visit campus and interview with admissions. At Tuck, we believe that strong interpersonal skills are essential for success as a leader and a team player. Accordingly, admissions interviews play a critical role in the evaluation process and give us a more complete understanding of you as a candidate. Although not a required component of the application, we strongly recommend that all applicants (including re-applicants) schedule an interview on-campus.

Tuck offers all applications the opportunity to interview on campus in Hanover. Interviews are scheduled online on a first-come, first-served basis and must be completed by the published deadline for the round in which you are applying. To schedule an interview, please visit the "Visit Us/Interview" page of our website. Please note that all applicant initiated interviews are conducted on campus only.

If you have not been able to come to Hanover for an on-campus interview by the deadline, the admissions committee may request that you interview. Invitations to interview are extended after an initial review of a candidate's application. Not all applicants will be invited to interview. Committee-initiated interviews will be conducted on-campus, off-campus or by telephone.

Campus interviews are conducted by admissions committee members and admissions associates (selected second-year students). Off-campus interviews are conducted by admissions committee members, admissions associates or alumni interviewers. All interviews are evaluated equally, regardless of interviewer or location.

Nonrefundable Application Fee
Tuck requires each applicant to submit a nonrefundable application fee. The online application fee is $220, payable by Visa or MasterCard.

Statement of Honesty and Integrity
All applicants must agree to the Tuck Admissions Statement of Honesty and Integrity, which states: Tuck expects that the work contained in your application, including essays and all accompanying materials, is completely accurate and exclusively your own. Tuck reserves the right to verify all information contained within your application. Tuck further reserves the right to rescind any offer of admission should we discover that any misrepresentation or omission has occurred in the application process or in your application, or if we learned that you have engaged in behavior prior to matriculation that indicates a lack of good judgment or integrity.

Nondiscrimination Policy
At Tuck, we have long been committed to a policy against discrimination. Tuck does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, disability, marital or parental status, veteran status, ancestry, or national or ethnic origin in the administration of our educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and other programs and activities. If you have any questions or concerns regarding our compliance to this stated policy, please feel free to contact: Dartmouth's Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity at 603-646-3197. Tuck is fully committed to the principle of equal opportunity in education and employment.

College Seniors
Tuck offers admission to applicants who have no post-college work experience but excel in other areas. Tuck may also grant deferred admission to college seniors whom we feel would benefit from full-time work experience. College seniors applying to Tuck or to any of Tuck's joint- or dual-degree programs should be able to demonstrate significant academic achievements, leadership experience, and accomplishments. Please do not apply until you have completed your fall 2005 coursework. For such applicants, one CSQ should be from a professor who is well qualified to comment on your academic qualifications. The second CSQ should be from a former employer or someone who knows you through a leadership role.

Reapplicants
Historically, Tuck has looked favorably upon reapplicants who have strengthened their candidacy in ways such as undertaking new leadership opportunities, taking on additional coursework that addresses academic concerns, or by improving their GMAT results. All reapplicants are required to submit a new application, essays (including the reapplicant essay), Confidential Statements of Qualifications (CSQ), and a nonrefundable application fee.

Reapplicants who applied between September 2004 and April 2005 only need to submit one new CSQ and do not need to complete a self-reported transcript unless additional class work has been completed since last year. Please upload a blank self-reported transcript that clearly states "reapplicant" on the form.

We strongly encourage all reapplicants to register for an on-campus interview to better help us understand how you have strengthened your candidacy.

Joint & Dual Degrees
Tuck offers joint and dual-degrees in association with Dartmouth's other graduate programs and some of the nation's best professional schools. The school also permits students to design their own dual degree programs with other universities.

Applicants to these programs must apply separately to each school. If you are admitted to both schools, Tuck will help you to work out specific curricular details.

Essays
Please respond fully but concisely to the following essay questions. Compose each of your answers offline in separate document files and upload them individually in the appropriate spaces below. Although there is no restriction on the length of your response, most applicants use between 250 and 500 words for each essay. There are no right or wrong answers. Please double-space your response.

Essay 1: Why is an MBA a critical next step toward your short- and long-term career goals?
Why is Tuck the best MBA program for you? (If you are applying for a joint or dual degree,
please explain how the additional degree will contribute to those goals.)

Essay 2: Tuck defines leadership as “inspiring others to strive and enabling them to accomplish great things.” Describe a time when you exercised such leadership. Discuss the challenges you faced and the results you achieved. What characteristics helped you to be effective, and what areas do you feel you need to develop in order to be a better leader?

Essay 3: Many highly effective leaders have noted that they learned more about leadership in times of crisis than in times of success. Discuss a significant nonacademic failure that you have experienced. What did you do that contributed to the creation of the problems you faced? How did you handle the situation, and what have you learned from it?

Essay 4: What do you most want others to know about you as a person? How do you hope that aspect of who you are will contribute to the Tuck community?

Essay 5 - Optional: Please provide any additional insight or information that you have not addressed elsewhere that may be helpful in reviewing your application. Complete this question only if you feel your candidacy is not fully represented by this application.

Essay 6 - Reapplicant Essay

(To be completed by all reapplicants) How have you strengthened your candidacy since you last applied? Please reflect on how you have grown personally and professionally
