004 It has been said, "Not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?
There is much discussion nowadays as to the topic of which source is more important for people to obtain knowledge. Some people deem that experience is the best way to gain knowledge. Others think that books are the main source of knowledge we obtain. In my view, I side with the latter opinion.
First, books are the most convenient way for everyone to approach knowledge. By reading books, we can climb the mountain without having to wear down jacket; we can travel any country without having to get a visa; we can go through the darkest forest without any difficulty. Nothing but books in the world can be the basic source for us to obtain a plenty of knowledge.
Secondly, books provide us with various kinds of information which is necessary for our lives. Compared with the length of limited lifetime, the width of books is boundless. For example, mathematics books focusing on numbers let us now how to deal with financial problems; history books recording past events let us avoid repeating mistakes; literary books reflecting social lives to enrich our pastime. In the modern world, the society is full of information. Therefore, books are no doubt the majority source for all.
Thirdly, reading books to obtain knowledge can definitely save our money and time. If we have one thousand, we can only travel one or two places to get some information. On the contrary, using the same amount, we can buy dozens of books instead of traveling. Meanwhile, we can save time in reading at home rather than in shutting between different countries.
However, to some extent we cannot ignore that experience is the source to obtain knowledge. Experience gives us direct knowledge and information since it is more active and exciting. Besides it is a way for a person to expand his horizon.
But in generally, especially for students who have limited time and money, books are the most effective and important way for us to obtain knowledge.
