Recently there is a view that people are likely to accept as a leader only someone who has demonstrated an ability to perform the same tasks that he or she expects others to perform. As we know, leadership itself is a complicated management concept which can be affected or defined by many factors, not just the ability to perform the same tasks. In this sense, I don't agree the speaker. In my point view, when we decide to accept a leader, we should focus on whether he or she has strong leadership, rather than whether he or she performed well on the same tasks.
Firstly, a leader's intitial role is to provide leadership to his or her team. Leadership mainly comes from individual charisma - the ability to motivate others to work with him or her to achieve their common goals. Leaders don't necessarily have to know everything about the tasks. A good example can be found in the case that the President of the States doesn't know every simple area in the public adminitration, such as education, military, healthy service, transportation, etc. With the development of the society, no one can know everything. Therefore, we can't expect a leader to be an expert in the tasks that he or she manages.
Secondly, the ability to perfom the same tasks well is not a indicator of strong leadership. It could demonstrate that he or he is a good doer, but can't substantiate he or she is a leader. For exmaple, in our company, Wal Mart China, we promoted some department managers to store general managers who had good performance when they were department managers. But we found we couldn't perform well in the position of store general managers. Why is like that? They lack strong leadership.
Admittely, some peoole will argue that if a leader we accpet has sound knowledge in the tasks, we can gain more guidance or direction from him or her. It is true that such a leader might be able to provide more professional consultation due to his or her previous expericen. However, with the changing and fiercely competitive world, we can't expect our leaders know everything.
And a leader wih strong leadershp can also provide good direction!
Consequently, we can't judge leadership only by whether he or she successfully performed the same task. We should look into his or her leadership quality-motivate others to achieve the common objectives.
