30-50 ranking schools may have openings, but as you may know, business phd students are very limited. usually there are less than 100 people, considering 5 years span, that is 20 people per year. not like physics or chemistry, which almost no american is interested, Business is pretty hot. Finance PHD is extremly hot. Last time I check, almost all the Finance PHD student I know have GMAT higher than 750(one exemption, he got 730), and everyone of them (yes, everyone of them) has an olympic medal (international level) in either physics or math.
go check out some average schools, competition there could be eaiser.
yes, there is International Business, though not every school has it. I konw the application will be very challenging, but i did not expect the situation as hard as Funnytiger descibed. Thank you Funnytiger. I am certainly more aware what I have to face now. I will tetake GMAT and do my best.
Actually, the the ranking of B-School in my University is between 20-30. Their Ph.D program seldom takes student directly from China. Most their Chinese Ph.D student from some other American universities or European universities. I knew one lady directly came from China, but her GMAT is 780 in paper-based test. Other top B-school Ph.D program also recruits their student from my university.
She came US in 1998. So she took GMAT before it became CAT. At that time, if one person's GMAT score was more than 650, people would call him/her DA NIU.
same rule applies to buiness PHD program too, just as Zhang206 mentioned in his post. with the road less travled, the better chance for you to get in. I know a buiness PHD who got recruited directly from China. His research topic in china is about Economic chanllenge of poor and country-side famrers. To americans, this research topic gets the full attention right away...
