题目是: It is better to have broad knowledge of many academic subjects than to specialize in one specific subject.
We need more specialized experts
The philosiphy that is adopted in the current education system is rather distinctive when compared to that of ancient times. That is, a broad knowledge seems to be more important today than before because the society has envolved to such a level that an increasing number of knowledge has become indispensable for people to make a living. For example, on the job requirements 50 years ago, being fluent in English or sufficient skills in Microsoft Office Programs would not be among the basics as they are very much so today.
Although it almost has become a fact that knowing broad knowledge is essential to survive the modern society, I personally think, from the perspectives of individual development and society advancement, the ability to have specific knowledge bears more importance.
Being able to possess specialized knowledge in one field enhances one's stability in any given career as these individuals are less irreplacable. When someone focuses on acquiring unique knowledge in certain subject, they tend to explore deeper and further. If this is accomplished, they would be able to solve complicated issues that "out-siders" may not have any insight upon. For example, if you are a tax accountant in a company who knows all that is required to be a competent employee, the management may need to come to you if they encounter any coporate or personal tax matters.
Sophisticated knowledge in one subject is not only beneficial to individuals, but also to the society as a whole. It is my opinion that the human civilization are not pulled by those who know it all. On the contrary, it is pushed by those who are committed to their fields and keep making progress in the fields they have chosen. A physician may not be able to cure cancer, but an oncologist might. This is a huge advantage that specialized knowledge empowers whereas broad shallow knowledge does not.
Based on the above, I believe I have made it clear that although people need more knowledge than before to survive, people should stay focused on and committed to the field they have selcted, to help themselves improve and our society advance.
